I've looked into skype and a couple of other non-swbell phone solutions. We basically only keep our land line phone because we have small kids and want to keep it easy for them in case of emergencies etc.
i've been interested in this as well. i didn't think that twc offered voip in my area (san antonio). i just checked out their website, and find it interesting that they make no mention of "voice over ip" or "voip". guess they are trying to distance themselves from competitors.
anyway, they charge $40/month minimum. that's the highest price i've seen, and may not save you much depending on how much long distance you use. vonage and att callvantage are both cheaper, but may or may not be available in your area. i have one brother who uses callvantage, and he loves it. another uses a smaller company that i cannot recall at the moment. when talking to both of them, i can't tell the difference in quality from a land line.
i believe they all can call 911, but that if the power goes out, the phone goes out. i would imagine that an uniterruptable power supply (ups) would solve that problem. but i am just guessing here.
of course, the att and vonage services presume that you already have a broadband connection; maybe that is why the twc is priced as it is, but they only cut $5/month off if you subscribe to roadrunner.
I just moved to Houston and had the TWC guy come by my place to install the cable and roadrunner. I asked him about the phone service and he said DO NOT sign up for it. They're apparently having a lot of problems w the technology. He also claimed that one of his SBC buddies was reconnecting tons of customers that went to TWC and decided to switch back. I'm not claiming anything, but the TWC installer didn't seem to ready to stand behind the service.
My biggest issue with the TWC and other VoIP services is that they don't work if you lose power. Even in a massive power outage that will take out cell towers, most traditional land line phones will work.
I am using Lingo and have no complaints....even better, I have been able to use it while I am over in Thailand to call back to the US for free...$19.95 per month...
I have Vonage and have no complaints either. I would have considered switching to TW to bundle all my services but the price is way too high and now I read this thread shitting on their service.
Yes it would suck to not have a phone in the event of a power outage...and not have ANY phone in the event of a "massive power outage", but I hate the phone company with the fiery intensity of 1000 suns so I am willing to take that risk.
I am beginning to hate TW just as much now, but that is for another thread.
parents just bought TWC and it is half the price for what they were paying SBC. They also have a 24 hour battery which will keep the phone on in case of a power outage. My mother is over 50 years old and said she can't remember power ever going out in Austin for 24 hours.
I think the power outage thing is a marketing tool for SBC. They called my parents and tried to get them to switch back over and once my parents told them TWC was half the cost they threw in the power outage thing.
Also, my parents have an alarm and the alarm people wanted my parents to pay $70 to turn on the alarm when it was disconnected at the switch over. My parents called TWC and they argued, but eventually sent a guy out to get on the phone with the alarm people and fix the problem for free.
Kinda messy starting up, but now my parents are happy to save almost $400/year over what they were paying with SBC.
My main problem would have gotten me at hello. Time Warner, that is enough to make it a deal breaker for me. Careful. You know when dealing w/ them you are already to expect ****** service and too much money for half the service. Wait for there to be extensive competition before they change that and offer you a good product and support along w/ a palatable price. In short and closing, F Time Warner.
I've had a couple of power outages just in the eight months I've lived in my new place -- which is out by Lakeway.
As for voice over IP, besides the power outage issue I'm also a little concerned about degraded speed on my computer's broadband connection while I'm talking on the phone.
Does anyone who has this service notice that web browsing and downloading take longer when you're also talking with someone on the phone?
