Time pieces (Watches) recommendations?

Who has a testimonial or a word of warning about a purchase of a men's watch or about experience gained in shopping for a watch? Has anyone spent $2,000 on a Swiss-made watch and regretted it? or loved it? Has anyone decided the finer watches were nice but too expensive and found a cheaper alternative that pleased you?

I've had a couple of nice watches made by a Swiss company called Tissot. Mind you, I'm not a watch conisseuer by any stretch of the imagination, and these $125 - $150 watches were by far the most I've ever spent on a timepiece. That having been said, they are stylish, nicely built, and keep great time. (I presume the latter is common to most modern watches that are based on a quartz crystal. You no longer have to pay for accuracy.)

Whatever watch you decide on...don't walk into a store in Austin or wherever and buy it. You can usually get them for cheaper from ordering by phone. Try Kenjo out of New York (800-548-TIME) and check and see if they have the watch you decided on. It'll probably be cheaper than at your local dealer and you'll avoid sales tax. Also ensure that they are the authorized dealer so you will get the manufacturer's warranty. I know Kenjo is authorized dealer for Breitling and many other nice watches. Yeah, they are obnoxious New Yorkers but you'll probably save some $$.

I spent $900 on a baume & mercier stainless men's hampton with a black band. Retails for about $1200 I think.

No regret.

I also have the $300 swiss army diving watch with the white face. If I was single I would buy the $2000 rolex that it looks like. Not that it would get me chicks or anything, I'm just afraid of my wife.

The wife and I bought Omegas for each other last christmas (Ladies Seamaster for her, Seamaster Pro Chrono for me). We're both very happy with our watches but we also shopped for quite a while (~18 months). We looked at Tag, B&M, Rolex, Breitling, Ebel, etc I kept coming back to Omega. She was split between Omega and a Baum & Mercier but decided on the Omega.

Spend enough time and effort shopping for one and I don't think you'll be dissappointed in whatever watch you choose. My advice would be to figure out what features you want first, then determine which watches have the features you desire. From there it should be easy to pick the right watch for you. Here's a site to get you started (mostly Omega info but still a lot of good information):

2nd the Omega. The wife has Constellation and I have a Seamaster. We have had them for about 5 years and they are great watches. Haevy, durable, reliable, etc. Somewhat pricey, but not over rpiced when considering the quality.
