So most of us have probably read the horrific events last night at the Batman opening in Colorado. Our first thoughts were (I would hope) that this is just a tragedy and a horrible act, yet another example of the kind of depravity that seems to be rising up more and more in society.
Our second thought is "why"? And ABC is right there to help.

You would think that the Gabriel Giffords attack would have taught them a lesson about jumping to such conclusions. Nope.

You're right, they just want it so badly to be true.

Kid Kraddick on Dallas radio was discussing the shooting and mentioned that last night was the beginning of Ramadan. Why say something like that when there is no info at all suggesting what was going on in this guy's mind?

Granted, Dallas radio isn't ABC national news, but irresponsible either way.

It's one thing for Daily KOS loon to speculate Tea Party, but a professional journalist on ABC?

Disgusting.

Not surprising, though.

Man talk about clutching at straws. Mr. Ross should lose his job. He is way too irresponsible to be a "journalist" on a major network.

A nano second used to be defined at the time between a stop light turning green and a NY cab driver honking his horn. Now a nano second is defined as the time between a nut going off with a gun and the network media attempting to pin it on the Tea Party.

Agree with the above....you'd think the Gabby Giffords thing would have taught the something.

So it turns out the AuroraCo Tea party guy with the same name is 52 Years old
How hard would it have been for ABC to research that?
But as AB pointed out ANC was glad to report on it and then
slyly say unsubstantiated.
Bell has been rung

Sooner or later, some card-carrying Tea Party member is going to "go postal" somewhere. I can only imagine these "news organizations" with their champagne on ice waiting for that day to come.

Agreed, teh press is irrresponsible in its race to be the first, whether the guy trying to tie it to the Tea Party, or the guy trying to tie it to Muslims. I think this guy has been and is pretty reprehensible in his speculation and attempt to extract political mileage, and him from a position of power too: “What really gets me as a Christian is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and then some senseless crazy act of terror like this takes place,”The Link Maybe this guy is a product of godless whatever, or maybe he is a religious zealot. Who knows at this point. I guess Gomert thinks he does.

The ABC guy is a boob.

The Dallas radio guy is a boob.

The Tex Rep is a boob.

It's like the major qualification for gaining the attention of/access to the media apparatus is being willing to say some sort of nonsensical ****. It is tiresome.

CNN and other media should stop showing the attacker's photo.

It is a disservice to throw that glare and look in the eyes, in front of the entire population. Create a sketch illustration and reduce the anxiousness and start-raving maniac look in the eyes.

It is extremely negative in the look. Nearly all the 'alleged' shooters lately have had maniac looks on their face, especially the shooter in Phoenix. I would not show either of those in a realistic photo -- only in an impressionistic illustration.

Also, here is a CNN online page showing the weapons used. All standard-issue and probably the 3 most common firearms owned by Americans with a set of firearms. Maybe not your typical 3-gun set you'd use for competition, but very common for each category they are. link.

An AR-15, not an AK-47, but the media loves to call any semi-automatic rifle an AK-47, or term it 'assault rifle.' Which is like calling any photocopy a Xerox copy, or calling any tissue a Kleenex.

He had a very common Remington 870 pump shotgun, just had a pistol grip on it as well.

And a .40 Glock, a standard Law Enforcement issue, standard caliber.

He did not have any exotic firearms. Just a neurotic brain. And heart. And soul.

Well the NRA is in complete ascendancy on gun control -- or more acurrately the dismantaling of gun control. Any serious policy maker who has to appeal to both parties knows the only prudent political strategy when it comes to gun control is to plant soft wet kisses on Wayne LaPierre's derrier. If you live in a liberal district maybe you can be indifferent, but even then you want to stay out of his crosshairs. We can comfort ourselves that while we may at some point be at the mercy of some lunatic who has a lot of legally obtained weapons, we know that we are all going to die someday anyway and the only in the Divine do any of us have genunie security in our lives and persons. Be prudent but don't live in fear. If you're competent with a gun and confident with conceal and carry by all means do. But if you don't have a fascination with guns and their proper use, best stay away from them because you are more in danger from accidents resulting from imprudent and improper use of weapons than from the bad guys. Killings at the hands of bad guys are scary, but statistically there are a lot of greater dangers out there, auto accidents, drowning, heart disease ...

ShinerTx: Back in the day, at least, the doors were wired to set off silent alarms. Theatre management could check it out, but the theory was that to prevent panic, we do not automatically trigger an audible alarm any time some 12 year old kid decides to sneak out the back door. Management manually sets off the alarm and evacuation notices.
