Tiger Quits at the Tournament

The Link. Seems a bit strange to me. In the past, Tiger managed to play through the pain to win the U.S. Open when his knee was totally shot. Here he walks off the course. Different situation - (a) it's not a major and (b) he's 12 strokes off the lead.

Time is showing that Woods always was a spoiled, arrogant brat. Hope he manages to get his personal life straightened out, but if he never plays golf again, the game will survive (and thrive).

So you know what his injury is now and how it may affect him differently than previous ones? I did not think so. If it is a bilging disc, back or neck issue can you not see how gutting it out may not be an issue? Was he not hurting in the Masters as well?

Golf will survive but will also take a blow to the groin in profits. Tiger is their ratings, period.

Odd that with cameras on this guy every second nobody has commented that he looked stiff, was working on his neck, nothing. Didnt visit any of the physio facilities last week that are set aside for the players.

I think its more he hates the course, wasnt in contention, and is going back to the range to work on his game.

A bit bratty but not the first pro to bag it. It was great fun to watch him mail it in at Quail Hollow though.

He needs to chalk up this year as a total loss and see about next year. The driving is awful and he aint gonna win majors like that.

Plus his head just isnt in the game. He looks extremely mortal. I am a little surprised by it honestly.

A doctor on SportsCenter today said that it appears that Tiger has a cervical radiculitis, which is an inflammation that puts pressure on the nerve as it emerges through the vertebra. (It's just short of a pinched nerve, which is called a radiculopathy.)

As someone who has had a cervical radiculitis, I sympathize with Tiger. I taught aerobics through mine, even though it hurt like hell to use my right arm. I can tell you that you CAN perform; it's just a question of how bad it's going to hurt and how effective you are going to be. And eventually you get to the point where you say, "No more!"

Mine was at C7, which caused a pain like no other I've ever felt down my right triceps and into my wrist extensors and caused my middle and ring finger to tingle and turn numb. I was miserable, even just doing my job. Writing with a pen and typing were excruciating, and when you consider that I am an administrative assistant by trade ... well, it just was awful to have to go to work. But I did work, and as I mentioned, never missed an aerobics class because of it.

And there are no narcotics that work on this type of pain. I tried several different ones, and none worked. The only thing that would dull the pain was to just get blind drunk. And you can't go through life like that!

I also had three months of physical therapy, which did not help, so I finally resorted to having three block injections in my neck. And if that hadn't worked, surgery was next.

The thing about a radiculitis or radiculopathy is that you can't see it -- you can't just look at the affected area and say, "OK, I see why you're hurting." And because of this, sometimes people don't believe you -- they can't see a lump or a bruise or anything, so therefore you don't hurt. I had this problem with my boss -- she didn't want to believe I was actually hurting since she couldn't see anything.

Tiger may indeed be a spoiled brat and an inveterate womanizer, but if he is suffering with a radiculitis, people should respect the injury and cut him some slack. The pain is real.

I stand by my original point - if this were a major and Tigger had a 3-shot lead, he never would have withdrawn. He would have gutted it out somehow. He walked because (a) it wasn't a major and (b) he was hopelessly out of contention.

Tiger is no more of a brat than many pros on tour, and no more of a womanizer either. That's why there haven't been that many who have openly criticized him, and why some including Jack Nicklaus have come to his defense. If anyone thinks that many golfers, including so-called legends and family men, haven't had their own share of marital infidelities over the years, they are kidding themselves. I have never found Tiger obnoxious....just exciting to watch (and like a lot of people I don't watch when he isn't playing).

I don't think ANY golfer would walk away from a three stroke lead in a major short of being unable to walk the course for some reason.

I ragged on Woods last week for the faux pas of walking a couple hundred yards ahead of his pairing still waiting to play, but I can't join in criticism for withdrawal based on an injury.

Especially an injury that very much impacts his swing. An injury that he did not know for certain was wrong and may cause longer more permanent damage. Shame on him.

Golf may go on, but I don't know if you would define it as thriving without Tiger, because the TV ratings will fall dramatically. This injury raises two questions, is it related to the car wreck or subsequent clubbing by his spouse, and is his career over?

Tiger has not earned the benefit of the doubt so **** him.

I did see Hank Haney quit today and said it was his decision.

And we arent talking about some screwing around. Tigers level was over the top even in that world.

I have always maintaned that Jack's major record would be difficult to pass, even for Tiger. Now with this, I question Tiger's ability to come back 100% totally dedicated to the game. He did well through the knee surgery, but now with the scandal followed by this, it's very hard for me to see Tiger coming back all the way to consistently win and be in the top 10.

I don't think he can just play 5 to 10 tournaments a year and expect to win 1-2 majors a year. If he gets this condition cured sometime this summer, maybe he will be 100% for the last two majors, maybe he wins one.

if he comes back completely healthy in the next couple of years and plays at least 15 tourneys a year, he still has a chance to pass Jack, but physical problems can pop up at any time.

Those physical problems, coupled with the lack of necessity to play for $ leads me to believe Tiger will retire early. I just don't think he's that into golf anymore.
