Thoughts on recruiting

In light of the RSJ decommit and Robbie Rhodes choosing Baylor over Texas, a few thoughts:

First and foremost, DO NOT PANIC! Signing day is a LONG ways away and we haven't even started the 2012 season. Also, let's look at the players we do have already committed. Guys like Jake Oliver, Raulerson, and Swoopes are good guys to have anchoring the class.

The season hasn't even started yet. We don't know yet how we'll do or any other team will do. We have a good idea based on talent returning for each of the teams but you never know.

Also, times have changed from 2009 to now. Recruits have more choices to choose from other than us and OU. In the meantime, we've gone 13-12 and other schools like OSU and Baylor have had great seasons. Not to mention they have bragging rights. So right now, its fair game for those programs to use it to their advantage and if you didn't have any strong ties to Texas, what would you do if you were a big time D1 recruit?

What will get our groove back is when we start winning 10+ games like we used to and we got alot of talent coming back. Once the passing game improves and gives us a chance to win, players will take a second look at us.

Thoughts?

I'm not panicking, but my eyebrow has crept up a bit to have a very prominent recruit decommit and to have another one or two hitting other camps. It's not the norm for us.

Maybe your explanations are correct. You are surely correct in saying only time will tell.

Recruits may not be the smartest folks on the planet, but they can see that MB allowed the program to decline while other "lesser" programs have worked harder and have "overachieved." Mack is paying the price for complacency and laziness among his staff and his failure to timely recognize and correct it.

I am worried, panicked, and am wringing my hands over these developments. Where there is smoke, most of the time there is fire.

If recruits are de-committing or going elsewhere because they perceive other programs to be somehow better, or whatever, you have to keep in mind that those other programs grew to where they are now with players who were not the top dogs at the time. They got where they are using 'lesser' - non-5-star- material.

The real test for Texas is what we do with what we get, not someone's ranking of those we do - or don't - get. If you rate our season based on recruiting for the following year, you need to re-focus.

The funny thing is we still have the #3 overall rating "average stars per capita" with recruits, and since we're not signing 27 dudes, people freak out.

This was supposed to be a smaller class. One of my faves was the 2005 class. We only had 4 whiffs out of 15 kids, compared to the 13 "misses" out of 25 from 2006.
