Thoughts on Arizona?

At least they are no taller or bigger than the Horns. Their starters are just about the same size as ours. That's good news for Gary Johnson who tends to struggle against longer defenders. Our bench has a size advantage over theirs.

I hope we are not relying on the bench guys providing that size advantage to win. Arizona is very salty. The best #5 seed without question. The ***-raping this committee gave us will be evident in each round until the Elite 8, if we make it that far.

They appear to be similar to Texas in that they don't appear to be a great shooting team, but are pretty physical.

As far as Texas seeding, I didn't see anything today that made me believe Texas deserved better than a 4 seed - that, or Oakland is better than a 13.

I agree that Arizona is probably the best No.5 seed, and I'll reiterate what I stated in today's game thread that I consider Oakland the best of the No.13s.

So, yeah, Kramer's assessment is spot-on.

On the bright side, if we go anywhere in this tournament, at least we'll have the pleasure of doing it against the likes of Arizona, Duke, UConn, etc. Not only are those good teams this season, they are marquee programs.

I'm interested to see how Barnes defends Williams. Does he start with Thompson on him, or maybe Gary? I'd argue to give Gary the first shot. A couple of reasons: 1.) it protects Thompson from foul trouble. We can't put Thompson on the bench. He's too important, as we saw against KU. 2.) It frees Thompson up to block shots as a help defender 3.) GJ is not too small to defend him in the post. He'll give up a couple of inches, but he's used to that. 4.) Williams plays a fair amount away from the basket. GJ is more adept at defending out there, because of his quickness.

Thoughts?

Today's brackets seemed to have a few close games and ton of blowouts for the better seeds, compared to yesterday.

Quick math, subject to pencil error, I come up with yesterday's 16 games an avg of 10.93 point winning difference.

Today's first 10 games, has an average of 17.2 point per game difference in the winning margin. Six games to go.

Yesterday had score differences of:
8
2
1
2
2
23
3
18
28
8
29
14
2
15
15
5

Today, first 10 games:
19
29
7
42
2
4
13
30
4
22

What does it mean? Don't know. Just fun number stuff.

Isn't Arizona one of those teams that's had our number in basketball in the recent past, kinda like Duke?

I heard during the radio broadcast of their game with Memphis that their worst free throw shooter among their starters shoots over 70%. So, big advantage there.

They have a superstar in forward Derrick Williams who is shooting over 60 percent from the field and from 3 point range, he is also a decent free throw shooter and good rebounder. Arizona also has 3 other shooters who are very good from 3 point range.

AZ has one real threat. Derrick Williams. He will disrupt the post and keep TT at bay.. We really need J'Covan and Hamilton to heat up the perimeter if we are going to have a chance.

Texas didn't look like they deserved more than a 4 seed today? Without a shred of a doubt, if we'd have played like a 4-seed today our team would be back in Austin already. That Grizzlies team is seriously talented. Oakland would beat 60% of the teams in this tourney at least. Yeah, they are way better than their seeding. As the 2nd highest scoring team in the nation looked the part, we did all we could to scratch out that win. It took a a huge defensive effort against the 3-ball today. And aside from the end we played a hell of a game swatting them back when they got close. It was only a matter of time before they made their run to steal it, and in the very end, last 60-90 secs, we did great keeping them from ever really having a chance to tie/win.

We kept them well below their offensive average in MANY big categories. And let's see, what did we do offensively...48% FG, 44% from 3, and 81% from line....those numbers are highly impressive. That damn Oakland team was dangerous as hell and would be still in the tourney with a different draw. Arizona would have their bags packed already if they'd have played Oakland yesterday...no doubt.

BTW, Arizona is IS NOT 2-0 vs. USC...they lost by 8 to USC less than a month ago. And comparing teams who beat teams, etc is no way to determine anything. Teams have a few bad games a year with no meaning. Arizona is WAY OVERRATED!!!...1-4 against Top25, That one win was a one-point win at home over Washington. Washington returned the favor with a 17 point beatdown at their place, and also bouncing Zona by 2 in the conference tourney.

Their conference in general is garbage this year. Arizona is one of only two Pac10 teams in Top25...them at #17, and Wash at #23). Texas wins by 10+...mark it down. Oakland was far better than this Arizona team who beat patsies all year. One win against #23 is their only signature win. The same team that beat them two other times. Please!!! Anyone praising Zona needs to tell me what they have done all year besides a one-point Wash win and beating teams outside of Top25. Texas will advance without the scare we just had from a solid Oakland squad...watch and enjoy.

Arizona doesn't have our number in basketball. Unless you consider five losses in 5 years as having our number. On second thought....
Gary Johnson was in the 8th grade when we lost to them last. I don't think the team will take note of our struggles with them in the past.
