After 2 games I will already admit that I was wrong about this team. I'm not raising my expectations to Elite 8 or Final 4, but they will be a pretty good team. The reasons for my change of heart are chemistry, offense, and defense.

I think the chemistry is obviously better than at any point last season and I think that has a lot to do with certain guys growing up. The guys seem to really like each other. Don't know if that was the case last season.

Offensively we look like an entirely different program. We are running the Flex offense, some old UCLA set plays, feeding the post and then moving without the ball, etc. The reason this is SOOO important with this team is because our depth is not very good. When you run set plays and set a lot of screens you can dictate who gets the ball and where. You can take stiffs like Wangmene and Hill and they can be important screeners and finishers. Lucas can become a decent option at PG because you aren't expecting him to create offense. Balbay's lack of shooting ability is less of a concern because he can screen and cut, so his man can't just leave him open. And, Jordan knows where he will get the ball, and how often, so he shouldn't feel the need to take stupid shots. The offensive change is going to be huge as the season progresses.

The defense is actually a pleasant surprise. Brown and Hamilton seem to have made adjustments and seem to be more focused on that end of the court. Hill and Thompson will provide some blocks, which we haven't had in 5-6 years. Add that to guys that already played d, and this could be a decent defensive team.

So far I would have to give Barnes an A+. We had SERIOUS chemistry problems, no offensive movement, no real play makers on offense, and some terrible defensive efforts. To notice these issues and adjusting his philosophy, then getting his players to buy into it, shows me something.

Now, the interesting part is going to be how they handle setbacks. If they have truely matured then they shouldn't be a problem, but we won't know until that time comes.

I was thinking the same thing. Really nice to see them come up with some chemistry. Impressed with Thompson as a freshman and Hamilton's improvement.

Should be a fun year.

I see cause for optimism, but lack of front court size and depth is going to be a problem. Heaven help us if Thompson and Johnson get in foul trouble.

Wangmene shows flashes of ability, but still gets caught in some awkward spots and forces shots under the basket.

Matt Hill does some important little things like setting screens and such, but much of the time he still looks like someone stuck in the middle of the lake that can't swim and that is only going to become more apparent against teams like Kansas State.

Oh no, not the lake analogy again.

As long as we have a point guard that cannot or will not shoot the ball, our offense is playing 4 on 5. That is a recipe for 1st round knockout without valid superstars at other positions of which I don't think we have. This team looks like a 5th or 6th place Big 12 team.

The post depth isn't really a concern for me. We can always go with a 3-guard lineup and push the tempo. Everybody but Hill can get out and run. All of our guards except Lucas have good size as well so in some ways it balances out.

I agree with the sentiments in the first post. Thank god basketball season has started, it takes the pain away.

2010 was a terrible year for Texas.

We still do not set screens with authority. Especially at the high post.

And, I'm sorry ,but Hill and Wag showed signs of ability as freshmen and a have regressed every year. Hill has developed brick hands just like Wag has had.

Lot more fun to watch than the second half of last year's team. Better chemistry and Barnes isn't yanking people too soon like he did all season last year. Sweet 16 would be a good goal for this team.

Proud of Barnes for nutting up and adjusting his offensive style, as well as doing a great job overcoming the chemistry issues. He got through to Hamilton, or the other way around, so that's a plus that somebody there is deferring.

So far, so

I'm so ready to get this football taste out of my mouth, but there's plenty to be concerned about (FT shooting, dependence on Wangmene/Hill, Hamilton's tendency to chunk up bad shots, ...). Given the complete collapse of the basketball team last year . . . . and the complete collapse of the football team this year . . . . this team (and Rick Barnes) has a golden opportunity in front of them to win over a restless fan base. It seems Barnes' best years come when the expectations are low - hopefully this will be another one of them.

Matt Hill needs to take it to the basket. Everytime he catches the ball, he looks to get rid of it and he always has his back to the basket. Maybe he needs to grow his hair back out because he hasn't played well since he cut it!

Hill is slow as molasses and can't elevate more than a few centimeters. Him taking it to the basket is only going to result in an offensive foul, or a blocked shot.

I don't mean to disparage Hill, because by all accounts is a good person that works hard in practice and gives a great effort. Still, in a more perfect world with a deeper bench he would probably only see the court in garbage time.
