This is why the NBA sucks ...

Yet another example.

Amazingly, Richardson was whistled for a BLOCK.

God, what a pathetic sport.

It's not what it used to be and therefore, I'm not as big a fan as I used to be, but I still enjoy the pure athleticism of the game.

Should have been a non-call. Looks like Richardson should make a trip to Popovich and take a few lessons in the art of flop.

i fail to see why a defensive player needs to fall to the floor and risk further injury in order to get a simple charge call.

The way the game is called, it would be smart to not even take a jump shot anymore. 9 times out of 10 a offensive guy going to the basket is either going to get the foul call or the defender is going to get out of the way because he figures he is going to get called for the foul no matter how well he defends it.

When there is any contact, a foul is supposed to be called, and it's supposed to be called on the person that initiated contact. Most of the time, that's the offensive player. But most of the time, the defensive player gets called. Seems like lots of people have figured that out, and to try to get a call on defense, they hit the deck every time someone touches them at all.

The rules are fine. The officiating is horrible. If refs would call the foul on the guy who started it, the game would be played better and there would be little reason to take a dive. While we're at it, make it a technical foul to take a dive. Call it "unsportsmanlike conduct."

What the hell was this guy thinking? "There's a guy standing right in front of the basket. He's 6'9". I think I'll jump right into him and pretend it's his fault when we collide."

I confess I am surprised, as I was expecting to be flamed.

Glad to see I am not the only one who laments the direction the NBA has taken over the past 20-25 years.

I thought you were gonna say "Cuz Magic and Bird have retired"--that is the last time I seriously watched the NBA

It started for me when Shaq woud bulldoze over people and the foul would be either not called or called on the defender. It was ******** and likely caused what I believe could have been the best player ever in the league to grow lazy and therefore never fully reach his potential.

That may just be me though. Basketball used to be a game of position too.

We play in the Big XII. Our games have no flow and many useless foul calls. We have no room to talk about the NBA's game.

And for those who haven't been watching, you're missing some great basketball. This isn't 1999 when the league was looking for a Jordan replacement. Its too bad that the league isn't full of brawls and matador defense anymore. Then things would be like the old days.

Calling out Shaq for ruining the game? WTF.

If anything, he helped create a better flow to the game, like the no-call circle under the basket. If you can't stop him with your body because your body can't get the job done, there's no reason to penalize a guy for being bigger than you. I'd wager that there will never be another "modern" big man as dominant as he was underneath.

What ruined the game is the front office, not the players. The lottery system is a joke. The officials are all too old to see anything. There's no advantage to making trades because of the contracts, etc.

Really though, the worst foul of all time is the one where the shooter fakes the shot and the defender jumps in the air to challenge it, and then the offensive player rams his body into the defenseless airborn player and chucks the ball toward the basket, and then the defender is somehow called for a foul.

Its the dumbest foul call in my opinion. The offensive player is the one who makes the contact, 99 percent of the time deliberately, and the "shot attempt" he makes is stupid most of the time as well. I dont care what player or team does it, I hate it.

No way you would be flamed from us old guys Gem that remember the NBA from the fifties, sixties and seventies. Back then the NBA played great basketball and that took high priority over entertainment. Fouls were called when they were done no matter who you were even if you were a super star. I know Wilt Chamberland fouled out in only one or two games in his career but that was because he played clean basketball and not because the officials didn't call it on him. Traveling was a no no and it didn't matter who you were. Back then a lot of those runs to the rims would have been called traveling. They didn't do much of it then and when they did the traveling was called. It was a cleam sport and the fans and players and coaches respected each other.

I became disgusted with the NBA around 1980 or so, when I saw Walter Davis take a rebound the length of the floor in three dribbles. He did a couple of zig-zags on the way, too.

I haven't considered the NBA to be a serious professional league since.

The article cited by the original poster underscores the real problem with the NBA. Why are we asked to give a **** about a missed shot by a team that's up 20 points in the fourth quarter?

Kendrick Perkins' 4th foul Tuesday night was a perfect example. Kendrick was just outside the paint and Vince Carter thought he was 24 years old again and tried to jump over him to dunk it, ended up running into Perkins' chest, and threw the ball into the air as he fell out of bounds. "Block" on Perkins.

The idea of a "block" being a foul almost doesn't make sense, considering that much of playing defense is about using your body to block the path from the offensive player to the rim.

Occasionally, it makes sense to call a block, usually when the defender scoots into the path of a guy who has already began a jump and no longer has the ability to change his direction. Oddly enough, Glen Davis pulled that move twice and the same guys who called Perkins for a block on a clear charge gave the Magic charges both times. WTF?

Worst of all time might have been when Karl Malone pulled a spin move and elbowed David Robinson in the forehead, instantly knocking the Admiral unconscious. Robinson's face was whistled for a block.
