Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

The fifth would pay $1.

The sixth would pay $3.

The seventh would pay $7.

The eighth would pay $12.

The ninth would pay $18.

The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.' Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.

But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).

The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).

The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).

The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).

The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).

The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

'I only got a dollar out of the $20,'declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'

'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I got'

'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

I am saddened that so many Americans feel the need to demonize other Americans simply because they are successful. Obama claims they don't play by the same rules nor do they pay their fair share. Its sad. I was brought up to aspire to success not to despise it. What has happened to America?

You forgot to mention the portion of the bill that the ten men left unpaid, for their children to absorb decades from now.

You know, during the Eisenhower Administration wealthy people in this country faced a confiscatory tax system. Totally unacceptable. Now they have a very tolerable tax situation, but the hysterical bitching and whining about it has actually increased. At what point do people who gain enormously from our system, people who create jobs and use leverage to make oodles and gobs of money, say, yeah, I couldn't have done this in Somalia and maybe what I'm paying is 'fair" as a way to support the country I love and in which I have prospered?

If this hypothetical was realistic, you'd have each man take out a fraudulent credit card in the name of his children and charge $3.33 of the total bill to each of those credit cards. In the current system, the country as a whole doesn't pay its "fair share." We're not willing to pay for the government we demand.

NJL, I was unaware the nation's debt is purely the result of unpaid tax bills. Here I was, all the time thinking it was the result of wars, defense spending, SS and Medicare.

you posted, "nor do they pay their fair share. "

Tsk Tsk you are sooooo last month.
NOW the Dems talking point is not that the wealthy don't pay their' fair share' since apparently even the dems now understand what a huge portion of the income tax revenue the ' rich ' do pay
NOW the phrase is, ' what the Rich can AFFORD to pay (even if it is unfair).
We all know BO and Dems will make better decisions on how to spend money so much betterthan someone who actually earned it

The 59% would be the amount the top 10% of the earners pay of the total proportion that is paid. So, the one guy would pay $59 of the $100 that was paid. You really thought this was about marginal tax rates?

The calculation that was published a year ago by the Heritage Foundation showed that the top 10% of earners paid 71 % of the federal tax bill, so the example is seriously flawed only in understating what the one guy paid. Maybe with total tax burden of all types, 59% would be right.

The analogy was not about marginal tax rates. Unfortunately, too many people do not even come close to understanding the analogy, yet quickly vote thinking the rich do not pay their fair share.

And, not where we are going, but where we are at.

No one has yet to determine what "fair share" is. It is bantied about, but we never hear exactly what that is. What is it? When are they going to tell us? They've been campaigning on it for years now.

I wasn't referring to unpaid taxes. I was simply noting that the total amount of taxes we impose and collect isn't enough to pay for all of "beer" we purchase. Instead, we borrow some of the money, and leave the tab behind as a legacy for the next generation.

I think the dems counter to this would be that the ppl walked into a bar and the rich guy drank 75% of the beer but only paid 59% of the tab. Basically meaning that they pay such a large percentage of the taxes because they have such a large percentage of the money. The guys that paid nothing barely got a drop to drink.

I don't think this way but just wanted to play devils advocate.

Larry, I'm pretty sure that the ones who paid nothing or very little would most certainly claim and drink their "fair share." Thy might want more, since the wealthy man could drink at home so it isn't fair for him to drink much at the bar.

I am getting these on the West Mall from Google Chrome. I think it is an effort (by Google) to increase my personal productivity.

Good analogy Aces.

In real life, some of the first four would probably qualify for an Earned Income Credit. For those guys, the bartender would pay them to drink his beer. It's only fair.

Mr Deez' signature is the one causing the malware alerts. i guess google chrome doesn't like Terry Crews' website

if you'd just told me about this vid I would not have believed it.
Both of those people are too stupid to function
but he is figured out a way ti rape the taxpayer.

The Judge will be called racist

While true and likely a recurring trend across the US, that video is depressing and disturbing. Let's hear one of the resident lefties chime in about whether this is isolated or a real trend.

For me, I see that Lindsay Graham has placed tax increases on the table. While I believe anyone who makes a political pledge is an idiot, I hope he and any of the other idiots who break the pledge are thrown out of office...

I know a lot of people through my work that receive these types of benefits. Some are families of four busting their *** and living on 15k a year. Some are much more worthless than the guy in the video. Instead of going to college, they are out stealing and dealing drugs. It all comes back to the age old question of government assistance. How do you get it to the people that really need it without spending more money checking than it saves?
