I used to like pass happy offenses in Football, until I saw Ricky and Emmit play.
I used to like high scoring basketball games, but after these last few, I'm loving this

What up, bro?
I'm with you. The good thing about this team is that it is a difficult matchup for all kinds of styles. For example, Tennessee likes to run the full-court trap. Thing is, DJ is one of the best ball-handlers in the nation. Some teams like to pound, GJ and Damion James can handle that. The only thing that scares me is a team like Duke that can hit the three. That has seemed to burn us a couple of times.

What up? Well, thats all true. But, I also think our offense is going to improve. In the last few games I've watched, we've been getting great inside looks, passing to the wing. The shots have been open looks, just not quite hitting. If they improve there shotting from 45% (which its been the last few games) up to 50% or 55%. While still keeping the same 3 point percentage, we would be fantastic.
And I'm loving Atchley, I think he had three blocks in one possestion against OU yesterday. At least it seemed like it.

Glad you got to see it. I didn't. For some ******* lame reason, the regional game here in Knoxville as a Pac-10 game.

I got home and nervously went straight to the computer to see the score.

I called in sick to work to help Jeremy change locks on his house (his wife left him for some guy). And thought WTF: I'lm off I can watch the game.

If AJ would have been remotely on on Saturday we would have won by 30. When DJ is on, this team is just scary.

I was wondering if I was wearing orange tinted glasses when I wathced that game. It just seemed to mean that there were at least 5-6 baskets that could have easily gone in.

How exactly is our offense going to improve?

Our points per possession number is 6th in the nation and #1 overall after adjusting for the defenses we've played.

Oh, I got that. And as you can see from my thread, I'm absolutely loving this defense. But our field goal percentage could increase. And I think alot of that is 3 or 4 shots in the last few games that have just missed, rolled out ect. and a couple of really errant shots. I'm certainly not complaining! And I am going to look into those efficiency stats - Thanks for the site.

Oh my bad. I don't watch the actual games. Thanks for the insight. Otherwise I'd be able to tell how well an offense is playing based on total points per game.

Barnes' teams do not play aesthetic offense, there's no argument there. And yet they are always near the top in points per possession. In fact, in news that contradicts what we see with our eyes, Barnes' teams have rated better on offense than on defense each of the past five years.

The key contributor is that we are always in the top 20% of teams in offensive rebounding percentage and usually much higher than that. In years where we get good play from our guards in terms of turnovers we become a very efficient offense.

This is why we struggle with big, physical teams. Teams that can neutralize our efforts on the offensive glass basically take away our most consistent scoring mechanism.

Anyway, as Sangre indicated, we don't want to sacrifice efficiency just to increase the raw total. That would be self-destructive. Certainly if you are better than your opponent you want to increase the number of possessions in a game to reduce variance and therefore the likelihood of an upset. But if increasing the tempo reduces your effectiveness then it's a bad idea.

Dude, I'm not freakin disagreeing with anything you've said. I don't want them to change anything on the team right now. BUT - when you are the 99th ranked team in field goal percentage, and the 56th ranked team in overall scoring, there can be, and probably will be an increase if you are supposed to be a top ranked team.

Bob hit the key point. If you shoot and miss every possession (no turnovers) in a game, but get the rebound, miss again, and get the second rebound and finally score, your FG% would look kind of puny at .333, but efficiency would be off the charts at 2 pts per possession.

Obviously this example is extreme and unrealistic for real game situations, but it illustrates the difference in the way you are looking at our offensive production and the way Huck and I are looking at it.

And just FYI, I fully understand your desire to see improvement in shooting percentage. I'll take an improvement in any stat that reflects our ability to put the ball in the hole. We're just showing why, despite being ranked low in FG%, our offense is still very, very effective and why that stat isn't particularly reflective of Barnes' scheme or the team's execution thereof.

I wonder where we'd be ranked field goal percentage-wise if we took out a few of those games where DJ was shooting 25 shots a game and making 2.

It would be cool, come tourney time, if each player got hot like they've shown they can get at different times this year. We'd - literally - be unstoppable.
