THINNING/BADLING: Remedies, treaments, chemicals?

So my wife, all of my friends and family members think I am crazy, but I can SEE that small changes have occurred regarding my hair over the last year, and I want to nip this **** in the bud (well, before it becomes a real and noticable-to-everyone-else problem).

What are some of the current fixes out there? Inexpensive ones - pretty certain I'm not ready for laser treatments or hair grafting - fairly positive I wouldn't even qualify for those procedures, in the first place.

Obviously, I've heard of Rogain, and Propecia, etc... Currently, I'm using shampoo+ stuff (Nioxin) that my hair chick recommended (who also thinks I'm crazy - but, that's what she sells to clients - that and something by Paul Mitchell)

What I'm really interested in, is hearing success stories from people who have used something that works.

Thanks.

Rogaine only works on the back "crown"(?) area, but it really works for me. I've been using it for about 3 months and my wife says she can see a huge difference. Its pretty easy to use - a spray in the morning and at night - and cheap if you get the Sam's/Wal-Mart stuff for about $5 a month. Good luck.

I have two balding buddies, well actually one now b/c he used Propecia and it worked like a champ for him. He used to NEVER go out without a cap on, but now he has a full head of hair that I couldn't believe after not seeing him for a long time. The other one is using that shampoo stuff that someone bought for him, and it doesn't seem to be doing a damn thing. Of course, I see him almost every day, so maybe I just don't notice?

How much does Propecia cost, anyone know? And is there any truth to the rumor that it keeps you from getting a woodrow?

losing my hair really sucked for me. The biggest reason is because my head is shaped funny; if you made me completely bald it would look hysterical, but with hair no one notices. That's the main reason I've been addressing hair loss for about 13 years now (since I was 22 or so).

if you're noticing it then it's almost certainly happening. You will notice long before others. And everyone who has been in your shoes and is trying to treat it will tell you the sooner you deal with it, the better. If you start now you'll be way ahead in the game.

Rogaine is good if, as stated above, you're only losing it in back.

I've been on Propecia for a few years. It has not stopped all my hair loss but it definitely helps. Another thing it's great at is keeping your hair healthier longer, which vastly improves the appearance. A hair can shrink to about 1/3 its original thickness before it falls out. Propecia delays this.

One thing you've got to realize is that you're in this for the long haul; once you start Propecia, you've got to take it the rest of your life. And it runs about 50 bucks per month if you take it daily. I've spoken to some doctors who think you can take it every other day and get the same results, but who knows if that's true. I would recommend going to a doctor and asking about Propecia.

Finally, I am now the proud recipient of 2 hair transplants (cue the "you can have some from my ***" comments) with awesome results. Hopefully you won't have to go that rout, but you might one day. It depends a lot on your age and the extent of your hair loss. There is hope of hair cloning sometime in the next several years, so if you can make it until then you'll be fine.

I may just be the lucky recipient of a receding hairline.

Everyone I know who has lost their hair/gone bald, started doing so in their early to mid 20s (like you, AFF). I'm 33 - just finding the timing really weird.

If you've got a receding hairline you are pretty much screwed. In my early twenties I basically came to look like Kevin Spacey.

A year ago I just shaved it. My only regret is that I wish that I had done it sooner.

There are some dudes out there who actually look good with a bald head - I have the distinct feeling I would not be one of them.

I'm fat and white. If I shave my head, you might as well slap a swastika on my forehead. I'd look like one of those aryan freaks.

Proscar is generic propecia. Comes in 5mg pills that cost half (each) what propecia costs (propecia is 1mg each). Easy to cut them into 4ths, and boom you are paying 1/8 of propecia. Any dermo will prescribe them. And maybe it's my imagination but I think I'm getting better results now because of the slightly higher dose.

I am a major success story on this ****. Completely stopped the jumpers, and it's been 5 years. Seriously, I have a little more hair now than I did in 1999. I wish I started five years earlier.

Keep the broken pills away from a pregnant or trying to get pregnant significant other though, bad bad birth defects from the powder. Somehow it does not transfer from saliva or spooge, weird.

FWIW: I heard some pyschologist (or somesuch) mention that men themselves are really the only ones obsessed with hair (or lack, thereof) - in other words, we exaggerate the importance in our minds of having hair. According to this guy/article, women don't notice or care. From the responses here, an inference could be made that this is true.

I have a few bald friends who have absolutely no trouble with getting women (O.K. one does, but I assure you it's not bc of his lack of hair). Not one of our group even cares.

Once the enemy advances beyond this perimeter, then you won't be Squirrel anymore.

Seriously, Proscar has done pretty good for me.
