Thinkpad or Dell Laptop???

My old Thinkpad T23's lcd screen just bit the dust- and I don't feel like screwing w/ fixing/replacing it (though I did replace the power inverter w/ no luck- before coming to this conclusion).

Question is-- I really like the trackpoint on the ThinkPad as an input device-- and I know Dell offers a similar device on their Latitudes. Should I stick w/ a new Thinkpad- or do you Dell experts have any rec's on what might be a better solution???

(Oh, yeah- I'm no stranger to Dell- I have a great Dimension- however, have never gone the laptop route).

Any thoughts

Doubtless that, if you can afford it, IBM Thinkpads are allsome and superior to anything else out there. I had a thinkpad for 7 years, no problems.

I second Holden's recommendation. If cost is not an issue, Thinkpads are tops in the laptop market.

You'll get varying opinions on the Dell models around here, but there's really nothing wrong with them. Thinkpads are just the best mainstream laptop you can buy right now.

I ordered the new Dell model Inspiron 700m a couple of weeks ago. It's the second lightest Dell model...much cheaper than the Latitude X300 and comes with a faster processor.

Has anyone used the new 'Navpoint' that has both the pointer and the flatpad on the Thinkpads now?

Was looking at a T41 or T42- but can't seem to find a model w/ the older design like on my T23- since most have the pointer/pad combination. My big fear is- since I can't see one in person- that the pad takes up too much space- or gets in the way- ala, Gateway laptop, etc.

Picky- I know- but anyone have any experience w/ this newer design? Opinions?

Thinkpads are indeed excellent. But, you do not get much for your money, they are very overpriced in my opinion.

Take a look at Fujitsu, they make awesome laptops which could rival IMB in terms of quality and reliability, for less money.

I would take Fujitsu over Dell any day of the week.

I currently own both.

My Dell Inspiron is a complete piece of crap. Keys falling off left and right and random power problems. And it rarely leaves the house!

Meanwhile, the firm has provided me with a basic Thinkpad that I constantly take on the road. The build quality is just so much better.

I don't think the cost is all that much different. The IBM is much cheaper when you consider quality and life expectancy. If you must go with Dell for some reason get a Lattitude model. The Inspiron's are consumer junk made with the cheapest parts available.

I have had a Thinkpad for the last four years while Mrs Pecos has just got her third Dell thru her company.

You get what you pay for.

Another broken record vote for Thinkpad. I've only had mine for about a month, but it's worked great so far. They have a much sturdier case than the Dells, and the warranty is 3 years as opposed to Dell's 1 year.

I could be wrong, but I heard you had to be a small business or educational institution in order to get the Latitudes.

I have had a T41 for 3 months now and I love it. I haven't noticed the touchpad getting in the way at all. I'd give it an A+ for the first three months.

What about Apple laptops? what is the difference in all of their models, I might get one cheap and used, I love tech.

Ended up finding a replacement LCD for $100- which replaced the old screen. Switched it ou- and now the machine works like a charm- though it's a lower resolution (XGA vs. the old SXGA screen).

One thing I will definitely do when I do buy my next one is to go w/ the higher resolution screen. It's amazing the amount of extra data you can get onto one of those screens (however, it will take your eyes a couple of days to adjust to the smaller fonts).
