You dont need to venture away from Scottsdale. The rest of Phoenix sux. I used to live in Scottsdale, keep heading east on Cammelback, nothing to see back to the west. Take a hike up Cammelback hill one day and there are lots of hotties out an about in Scottsdale. the weather is perfect right now. Too many Californians for me though.
The Fiesta Bowl sucks. Golf...whoop dee freaking do. There's nothing there you can't do in Austin.
New Orleans and Miami...those are different stories. Restaurants alone are a reason for those two cities. Heck in Miami, you can still go to the beach in January. Man...Texas got screwed.
I promise that I do not know this place from personal experience, but if I were going the game I suspect that I'd get a craving for a burger... The Link The Link
Mountain biking on South Mountain puts the Barton Creek Greenbelt to shame if you're into that. Phoenix (with Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, etc) is basically one big sprawling suburb- they still have Whataburger though so you can fill up on A-1 Thick and Hearty Burgers if you're not getting pampered at some snotty resort.
Went out a few years ago and stayed At the Sanctuary on Camelback. Agree with earlier post. Definitely a must to do that hike up Camelback one morning. It is basically the "Town lake trail" of Scottsdale. Lots of joggers out and you throw in a hike instead of a jog. Talent galore! We did a day trip up to Sedona. Didn't do a whole lot for me. Kinda like Fredericksburg. We spent a day in old Scottsdale and did a lot of drinking. There is a poster on here, can't remember who it is, who lives in Scottsdale and directed me in right direction.
I recommend The Buttes resort on the other side of the freeway from ASU campus where the Horns stayed when the SS Mackovic sunk against JoePa because Mackovic IS/WAS such a world class butthead. old news. The Buttes has an awesome pool. Got to spend a little time with Phil Dawson and Mike Adams there.
I don't know the snow conditions, but just a little east of Phoenix there is a ski run called "Sunrise" on the edge of an Indian reservation. Nothing like Colorado, but it is so close that you can do it for a half day if you don't have much extra time. Again, I don't know the snow conditions this time of year.
Whatever you do, don't go to Mt. Lemon (near Tuscon) to ski. It is all in the trees, very icy-slick, even on the best days. That would be a waste of your time and money.
I am staying in Mesa and will be looking around, so I will let you know if I see anything. We are actually going to drive to the Grand Canyon first and then head down to Mesa. My wife and I have been but our 4 & 2 year old have not. We are really excited about that.
It is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Phoenix though.
Back to the OP: Here's something you can't do in Austin: Frank Lloyd Wright. GO TO TALIESIN WEST. It's in Scottsdale. And if you are really wanting the deserty oddball experience, go to Arcosanti. Paolo Saleri spoke at the AIA convention in Florida this year (he's about 90 years old and I think they wanted to have him over before he dies) on green building.
Two colons in a single sentence has to be a violation of some kind. Hey, that's kinda funny.
