The University, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to bulldoze Players and the Radioshack, IT Copy, etc... shopping center around there to construct a hotel and conference center. The University has apparently low-balled Players on their offer, and has already threatened eminent domain.
The Board of Regents has already approved the use of eminent domain for this case, and the story is just now starting to get some local media coverage. However, Players' reach extends to all who have been members of the UT community, not just Austin residents.
Maybe you don't like Players (I do), and maybe you think Austin needs another Hotel (I don't, and it doesn't). But it does seem kind of silly that the University would force out two local businessmen (and UT Alumni) who just want to make some good, reasonably priced burgers, so they can open up a hotel where they will no doubt serve average, overpriced burgers. It's kind of ridiculous.
This hotel, conveniently located just blocks from the stadium and the Erwin Center, will no doubt truly serve as just another place for alumni to be able to stay during football season...the conference center is, in my opinion, a secondary concern in this venture.
I don't like bashing the University, but sometimes (like the Tower lighting fiasco last night, deregulated tuition, constant fee hikes) this great school really makes you scratch your head and say "Dude...weak." Here are some helpful links. When you read, think about how good a Players' Combo with Cheese sounds right about now.
(For some reason I am physically incapable of posting links correctly, so bear with me and do a little legwork to get to these sites
