There's a mouse in the house

So it appears that a little house mouse family has taken up residence under our abode. We are on a pier and beam foundation, in a older house. I've laid traps and caught a couple of the little *******, but I think that there are still a few more down there.

This is ******* gross, and I want to be rid of these things. I think that they were initially attracted by availability of dog treats, but that problem has been rectified. I picked up a couple of these ultrasound deterents, but I don't think they really do ****. Seems like the old school mouse traps are the best alternative. I am not too keen on the idea of poison. I've seen too many dogs requiring vit K after getting into the stuff.

Any suggestions?

I'm on pier&beam too. Hate seeing those little ******* shoot by in my peripheral vision. Gluetraps work but stick with the death traps if you're a softie. Little beady puppie eyes are hard to chunk in the garbage knowing they'll live quite a bit longer. I finally found their entry points and shot that canned foam into it. No problems since.

Canned foam? More info please.

And I have no problem putting the little guys out of their misery before they hit the garbage. If I have to listen to my wife ***** about it any more, I am tempted to put myself out of my misery too.

Get a Black Mamba! You will be surprised at the things that won't bother you again with one of those. No birds, no cats, maybe no more neighbors either.

great fun, lemme tell ya. the best thing i found to work is old school traps with granola bars mashed on em. peanut butter didn't work at all for me. never thought the sound of a mouse trap while in bed at 2 AM could be so enjoyable, but it is. die f'rs.

whats even more fun is having raccoons live in the attic, all kinds of racket at the darkest of hours. maybe those guys took care of my mouse problem.

or possums in your walls, that's neat too; nothing better than hearing your pipes shake in the middle of the night along with scratching. *******.

you got it ballrific. they scratch the **** out of the walls/ceiling. can hear the fat ******** squeezing through holes. The main reason i say raccoons is b/c we've seen em on the roof + we live a few hundred feet from Magnolia Cafe.... talk about heaven for vermin. might try to get my roomies staffordshire mut in the attic and laugh my *** off (until the smell kicked in)

Thanks for the tip on the foam. I think I have located a couple of their entry points, so I'll give that a shot. But I want to kill the *******. I don't want em crawling in my walls to the attic.

And don't get me started about possums. I have had to suit up twice to crawl under the house and remove a decomposing possum carcass. Fun, let me tell yeah. I am in the process of trying to train the wife to swerve to hit them when she sees them in the street.

juvenile cat/older kitten. We were already going to adopt one, when I spotted two the day before kitty got a new home. Never saw them again.

Cat is a great idea for a pier-and beam. Otherwise stick to the old-style traps. I've found the crunchy peanut butter works better than the smooth.

I am afraid you have constructed your house in the habitat of the endangered Balcones Canyon Field Mouse. You must tear down the abode and restore the habitat to its previous pristene natural condition. Inform your neighbors as well.

We are on pier & beam too and had the same problem (with big rats though) a few years ago. Our cat took care of most of the problem (and had fun doing it), but I would highly recommend getting a profesional to look at your house to make sure it is completely sealed. Fortunately we are coming into the warmer months when these guys won't be looking to come inside.

Don't use poison. Aside from the risk to pets, etc, rodents tend to die in the most inaccessible locations and start smelling. Good old-fashioned snap traps are the best.

When I was growing up, we routinely had possums in our attic, but that was childsplay compared to when a skunk had her litter under our house. Big fun.

About 2 years ago, my then 8 yr old, 'city-raised' daughter was visiting my folks in Young County when my dad and a neighbor flushed a litter of skunks from under a barn and set upon them with the old 12 gauge ambush. I still laugh when I remember her telling me the story "Do you know what YOUR dad did?" She didn't call him grandpa, pops or any of the normal names. It was YOUR dad.

one of the few reasons i enjoy living in a new condo building. my house last year in columbus was infested with mice that basically took over my kitchen. i never really heard them, but i constantly saw their disgusting droppings. my lame cats would sit and wait for them, and then just watch. they never did a damn thing. snap traps and glue traps really didn't do much. eventually my *** of a landlord hired/paid for an exterminator, who put down this sawdust type stuff that is apparently poisonous to the mice but not to pets - dont know how that works. it worked, but then i had a massive fly infestation for a few days. the whole experience was horrible.

Had rats and field mice in my classroom for a while one year and have them periodically in our garage and eaves. Came back from Christmas break and the suckers chewed all 8 of my African Violets to nubs as well as some other plants. Hot glue a large piece of dog food to the trap - that works well and is reusable! Post a few above is right - hearing that sharp snap at 11:00 or so at night is a nice sound!
