There was a fox in the yard in Central Austin

Holy Cow! I'm sitting on the couch with my girlfriend watching "Master and Commander" here in North Central Austin tonight. We've got the floodlight on in the backyard. A freakin' FOX runs up to the sliding glass door, looks at us, walks out to the center of the yard, pees while still looking in at us, and runs off to the side.

This was not a coyote. It was not a dog. We had a good 20-30 second stare at it and it was a fox. It had the upraised tail, the long, skinny face .... everything. I could not believe it.

There are tons of possums, squirrels, raccoons etc... here but, had I not seen it with my own eyes, I would have never believed it.

The odd thing is that she works on Manchaca just north of William Cannon on a wooded, three acre property and they had one there this week, too. They watched that one in broad daylight for about five minutes.

How strange. It's like Wild Kingdom.

I see foxes in West Austin periodically. The last one was a few weeks ago near the Blockbuster Video at 360 and 2244. There is a wooded area right behind the store. I think it came out to get a drink when the sprinklers were on. The one I saw was red w black face. Yours?

14 years ago I saw a beautiful gray fox at Duval and Amherst in North Austin across the street from Balcones Park. I've seen two more since in the same area but neither were as large as the first one.

I have a fox that lives in the wooded area near my house in Brenham. It comes up to my sliding glass backdoor and looks in at me from time to time. Kinda freaky somestime when I'm not expecting it. I'll get the feeling that I'm being watched, look up and there it is.

I also see foxes on my commute to and from work on occasion. I think that the decline in fire ants has allowed them to make a bit of a comeback.

We're going to see more and more of this as their habitat is taken for development. Sad, really.

never seen a red fox, but plenty of gray foxen around the area. i had a pet one named seminole when i lived on lake travis. wasn't really a pet, but i could feed it bologna.

One night last week, a neighbor knocked on our door to show us a porcupine walking down our sidewalk near Pillow Elementary north of Steck.

I couldn't beleive it. Is this common in Texas, or did someone's pet porcupine get loose?

I was just going to mention all the porcupines I saw when I drove back to Austin from LA. I must have seen close to half a dozen dead on the side of the road. I don't recall ever seeing one growing up. Did see a few armadillos as well which gave me a smile. Not because they were dead but because I had actually seen one again. I h adn't seen one in probably 20 years. I thought they were gone for good. Also saw something that I had never seen before, looked like a mized between a ant eater and a sloth but with the coloring of a skunk. Was pretty big and lanky but really low to the ground. Also saw a huge buck on I10 out near Ozona right off the side of the road. Must have been a 10 pt or so. Huge deer. Just looked at me as I whizzed past. Was praying he didn't take off in front of me. And geting back to the topic, saw some foxes as well.

I rescued a "dog" years ago and I swear it is part fox/part dingo. Cool dog - just sits outside all night long waiting for opossums, coons, or other varmit to come into her path. She's got over 30 confirmed oppossum kills over the past 7-8 years.

There is a family of red foxes that live right behind the apartment complex on Great Hills Trail in the Arboretum area.

Also just saw a coyote a few days ago on a trail in the Bull Creek dog park at 2222 and 360.
