The Worse Cheaters in Sports!

Remember this is alledgedly because no formal investigation has been done but what evidence that has come up is incriminating. It didn't happen in any pro, college or even high school sports but in World Little League Baseball of all things and this is supposed to be for the kids run in an honest way.

In 1997 Japan caught Taiwan using ineligible players and Taiwan didn't participate until 2003 and they haven't done too good since. In the Little League finals the top 8 foreign teams play elimination games as do the top USA teams with the final winners advancing to the championship.

This could even be worse cheating than in the Tour de France with drug cheaters so hang onto your hats if you want to read farther.

The question is did Taiwan cheat in earlier years. The evidence indicates yes since some of their own players have admitted that they used other student's ids to get on the team. The teams are restricted to come from a certain area as well as age limitations. This is to eliminate having national teams. For example people on the Dayton, Ohio all star team have to live in or close to the City of Dayton. You can't have anyone that lives in New York on the team. The id fraud indicates that they were over age or not from the area or possible both. It has also been rumored that they prepared all year long which is also against the rules.
From 1969 to 1974 Taiwan won 5 of the 6 championships. (Remember when I write Taiwan I mean cities located in Taiwan. Since the evidence indicates it was really an all star team with some overage players I will just use Taiwan here.) This had never been done before and this was a red flag that investigations should have been made. But this suspicion didn't result in any action by the officials until Japan caught them in 1997. Since then it seems they have been doing a better job of investigations thank goodness. Another red flag was not only did they win but in many of their games it was not even close. In fact the fans booed them in 1974 because of the suspecions.
Taiwan won 17 of the champions over 27 years from 1969 to 1996 and were runner ups in 4 years. With information that has come out it indicates that dynasties should be checked out carefully.
I don't like to be critical of Taiwan but with all this circumstancial evidence it does indicate cheating was going on. Remember that USA teams lost to them 17 times and one wonders how many of them would have been world champions if Taiwan had been honest. I look at teams that lost to them such as Springs, Texas, Cranston, RI, San Ramon Valley, CA, Altamonte Springs, FL, etc and how these young boys lost the chance of a lifetime because someone cheated. It also makes one wonder if the same situation exists for other foreign teams that were beat out by Taiwan and denied their chance in the championship game.
This is a dark chapter in sports history and even though the Tour de France and other sports have suffered from cheating this one involved injustices agains other teams and countries and worse yet against young boys dashing their chance of a rare opportunity. A shame indeed.

Do you mean "The WORST cheater(s) in sports"?

Or "THERE ARE Worse cheaters in sports?"

Worse (when comparing two, but can be one of a group greater than two)

Worst (when comparing three or more)

Didn't Mexico get in trouble back in the 70's for using overage players in Olympic Soccer? Seems like something happened that was pretty Aggy.

Oh. Here it is...

[edit] 1990 World Cup Mexico was disqualified from the 1990 FIFA World Cup (and any other international competition) after using players over the age limit allowed by FIFA in the qualifying round for the Olympic Games in Seoul 1988. The punishment originally was only going to be applied to the Olympic team and not the World Cup team, but the penalty was applied to all Mexican national representatives of all sports for two years.

No, they are only the second worst or most cheating program ever in the history of college sports. Alabama has them beaten but not by much and prob. not for long. aggy is third.

ou is proud of their legacy of cheating. aggy is in denial.

If the Taiwanese Little league teams were indeed 'All-Star' teams, I think it does put a blemish on those championships and accomplishments. But this type of cheating happens even here in the States. How often do we hear about top high school football or basketball athletes transfer to a powerhouse school, leading to cries of cheating from opposing fans and coaches? It appears to happen a few times every year. Although it is wrong, to call this the 'worst' is simply an exaggeration.

I used to live in Taiwan, and if you know the conditions there in the 70s and early 80's, you would understand the significance of those championships. It was a poor country with little to no baseball facilities. In fact, I cannot recall EVER seeing a baseball field in person there. Compare that to here in the States, where there are at least 4 baseball fields within a 3 mile radius of the small Texas town (pop 70,000) where I now live. And that's not counting the ones within the schools. To field competitive teams repeatedly under those conditions was impressive.

Also, the consistency of excellence of these teams is astounding. As we see with the Yankees and the Red Sox, who seem to nearly field All-Star teams every year, better players on paper do not always equal results on the baseball field. Those kids still had to go out and perform, which they did for the most part.

In retrospect, this event brought a lot of national pride to the Taiwanese, who desperately needed it at the time. Taiwan is in the shadows of China, alway fearful of an impending all-out attack and occupation by the communists. And I don't think most Taiwanese realized there was any cheating going on - perhaps some denial there as well. But I know the interest in baseball gave Taiwan some escape from those dangerous times, and gave the people in Taiwan a sense of connect to the U.S and to the rest of the world. Remember, communist China continues trying to silence Taiwan representation on the world stage, and it was even worse then. While the end does not justify the means, the end was not all bad, especially politically.

All in all, if Taiwan cheated, I am glad they eventually got caught, and hopefully it won't happen again. But when you put it in context, it certainly was not the 'worst' or the most damaging thing ever. Not even close IMO.

My apologies for my typos but remember I am not a UT grad or even an ex. I only claim to be a fan. Unfortunately when it was time for me to go to college it was just more to finances that made me have to go to a college closer to home. So don't let my english errors be a reflection on UT because I don't have the honor of even being an ex student.
