Turned 70 this month. If you don't like this movie then you are, well, a big fat loser.

The Link

When I was a little kid, the Wicked Witch of the West used to scare the **** out of me. Kinda funny looking back now.

Two of my favorite quotes are from the Wizard of Oz:

A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.

If you ever go looking for your heart's desire, don't look beyond your own back yard, because if it isn't there, you never really lost it to begin with.

I read somewhere that when they were filming it they decided they needed a "greatcoat" for the Kansas version of OZ (Professor Marvel) so they went to a thrift store and found one they liked. A few days into filming the actor noticed that a name had been written into the label: "L. Frank Baum". His ownership of a coat such as that one was confirmed by his widow.

If you haven't yet, watch it with the sound off and Dark Side of the Moon playing. It's entertaining to say the least. IIRC you start the album on the MGM lion's third roar.

^^^^I watched Wizard of Oz along with Dark Side of the Moon at the Pink Floyd Laser Light Show in Austin a couple of times. WOW! lol

Texanne,
Another great line:
"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"

I actually use this quite often. The perfect diversion!!

I don't recall that last line from the movie, might have to rewatch it. Those flying monkeys gave me the creeps as a kid, though, a lot more than the witch.

One thing about the movie that has always bothered me:

When the Wicked Witch of the West sends her flying monkeys to capture the foursome, she says, "And send ahead a little bug to take the fight out of them."

Yet they ended up cutting the scene/song "Jitterbug." I hate when editing leaves things like that hanging.

What you might not know is that Buddy Ebsen (Jed Clampett, Barnaby Jones) had been hired to play the Tin Man, but he had a bad allergic reaction to the silver makeup and had to be replaced. He still got to be in the movie, however, as he was not allergic to the green makeup worn by the Gumbies. He's the one who says, "She's dead -- you killed her!" and (about the broom) "Please, and take it with you!"

So he at least got lines, even though he had to be demoted from a starring role through no fault of his own.

One more thing, by the way. If you don't think Somewhere Over the Rainbow is the greatest song from any movie musical ever made in the history of all mankind, I will kick you in the shins next time I see you.

Being afraid of the witch and the flying monkeys is a common experience amongst almost all youngesters who have seen The Wizard of Oz. Myself included

It's that experience that makes me hesitant to watch it with my kids. But maybe i am being a wuss and it is just one of those rites of passage we all need to go through.

If not the witch or the flying monkeys, i am sure they will find something else to scare the bejesus out of them.

I'm only 50 so the first couple of times I watched the Wizard of OZ it was on a black and white TV interspersed with about 50 toothpaste commercials. (I think they were Colegate, but maybe for Crest) That said, when the wicked witch's face turned up in the crystal ball, it horrified me to the point I could feel it in my stomach. Those flying monkeys really gave me the willies as well. Great and memorable movie.

Depends how young they are, Yo. My kids watched it without problems, but today's kids are so desensitized to scary movies, it's just a different world.

It's funny how scenes and sounds from this movie populate the recesses of my mind.
Once, after a bad female boss was fired I was driving to work the next morning and the tune from "Ding Dong the Witch is dead" started playing in my mind. I spent a minute or two recalling the lyrics and then sang along happily with the sound track in my mind. Another time my subcounscious would play the drumbeats from "If I only Had a Brain" when Rick Perry made a televised appearance. I had to think for a minute to figure out where it was coming from, the thanked my mind for a nice laugh, especially when it put our governor's face on the scarecrow, that magnificent hair replaced by straw.

Same age range here, and I seem to remember getting a little on-edge as the tornado approaches Kansas - then the witch threw another whammy..

Then they should have edited the previous scene so that we aren't teased with the little bug.

Or reshoot the Jitterbug scene so that the tree operators are not seen.
