OK, I have never seen The Wire per se but it looks pretty good via clips and people talking about it. I have the chance to buy the entire series at Best Buy for $89.99 (half price). Is it worth it?

Yes. You will watch the first three episodes and wonder what the big deal is. You will then be hooked. By the last episode, you'll be sad that the best series ever created for TV is over. You'll miss every character on both sides of the law either living or dead.

You won't be sorry.

It's well worth the $90 price. Best television series ever. Amazon has it at the same cost if you want to avoid paying local taxes.

Be aware that the packaging for the full series comes in cardboard sleeves and thus can be scratched up when you open them. Check out each disc to make sure it looks good then throw them in a case or plastic sleeve.

Concerning technical aspects, it would be nice to see a Blu-ray release but I don't know if it will ever happen. The show was shot on film and framed for 16:9 so there is a slim possibility a 16:9 release could come some day. The HBO recaps before each episode were always 16:9 HD shots so it is possible. Even having the 4:3 episodes on fewer scratch-resistant discs would be nice.

Bought it.

Thanks for the input. Everyone have a Merry Christmas and Happy (and safe) New Year!

Wife and I got this two weeks ago from Amazon as a Christmas present to ourselves. We're going to start watching tonight.

I assume atx is still watching it. It sucks you in. Cannot wait to see your response to it. I love when people give feedback as I get excited that they are excited.

100% worth it.

like someone said, it will take you a few episodes to get into it, but i guarantee you that you'll get hooked quickly and want to get through it as quickly as possible.

season 4, especially, is heartbreaking, enlightening, and thoroughly entertaining.

i remember being genuinely sad when the last episode aired. fantastic series.

I watched the first 2 seasons online but the quality was so poor that I made the decision to buy the boxed set. Never regretted it.

When I finished season 4, it hit me that I only had 1 season left and I didn't know what I was gonna do when it was over. That's the only bad part about the whole deal.

I just got the complete Deadwood, so I'm getting a fix, but it's not quite the same.

LOL on Ziggy. Hard to believe that dude played my favorite character on Generation Kill.

I can't believe this show only made 5 seasons. I'm about to finish season 4 on netflix and can't wait to buy the set so I can watch it again.

it is getting to the point of stupid. i just finished the 3rd season again..... this is my 3rd time through. i can usually knock out a season in like three days. best show i've ever seen.

the wire is better although, i will say the sopranos had a lot more laughs. the writers for sopranos had some really memorable comedic moments.

but the wire is still overall better.

How does The Wire compare to The Shield. I myself haven't seen The Wire but have heard it was good from a few friends as well. I loved The Shield and thought it was one of the best TV shows ever.

I'd give slight edge to the sopranos, but it's close. The sopranos is more brooding and literary. The wire is more hard edged and realistic. Among popular novelists, the wire's got a Tom Wolfe feel, while the sopranos is a John Irving work.

the shield is not the same type of show at all.

the shield is more of an action/suspense/drama, whole lot of really crazy **** going on at the same time.

the wire is about the street.... ya hear? the wire is methodical and sometimes slow moving... to it's credit. and the wire is the only show i know of, as someone else on here pointed out about a year ago, that doesn't have one main character. it could be argued it was mcnulty early on, but not so much after season one.

The Wire and the Sopranos are my two favorite shows.

I personally like the Sopranos a little bit better, but I think the Wire is the better show.

To me the Sopranos was a little bit more entertaining.

As far as the differences in the show...... heres what it comes down to me. As great as the Sopranos is...there are significant portions based on fantasty.

The Wire isall real life and will show you things and characters that you have never really seen on tv before.

The difference between the Wire and pretty much any other tv series ive ever seen is that each season is essentially a 13 hour movie broken up into 12 episodes. The writing, storylines and acting are unlike anything you'v ever seen on tv.

The Wire is litterally like watching a 13 hour movie.

I think Simon put it well when he said the Wire is a descendant of Greek Dramas while the Sopranos is a descendant of Shakespeare.

The Wire- The deal sealer for me....spoiler

Omar going out in the most unromantic, non-cinematic way possible. Where else are going to see that.
