Has anyone hiked to "the Wave" in Coyote Buttes, Utah?
Mrs. Grasshopper and I are considering taking a trip there in the fall or spring to see if we can find it... (along with some of the other parks around that area...)

the Wave

I'd love to talk to someone that has tried this hike to see what its like.

Seems pretty hard to get a reservation, but it might be worth it.

Thanks!

We were out there last May. We reserved our pass 3 months in advance but I think you can show up and get a permit at the local ranger's office.
It's pretty hard to get to. You'll have to drive about 10-15 miles down a gravel washboard road to get to the trailhead.
We didn't think it would be such a tough hike as it was. there's no marked trail and you'll have to walk through very loose sand over some sizable dunes.
It's literally in the middle of nowhere, the silence is deafening and the scenery is amazing. We thought we were the only ones out there but when we fianlly got to the Wave there was a German couple there and that was it. I have no idea how they found out about it but they said they just showed up at the ranger's office that same day and got a permit.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is only about 3 hours away from the Wave, if I remember correctly. We had some well deserved drinks and a very good dinner there at the Lodge.
So, depending on when you go the heat can be tough (it was about 95-100 when we hiked to the Wave) and it's not an easy hike but well worth it though, in my opinion.

Have fun!

MSH,
Thanks for the info. From the folks I've talked to here and in Colorado, it seems not many people have heard of this place or gone there. I like your idea about swinging by the Grand Canyon. I was at the North Rim 10 years ago and liked it (read that only 10% of park visitors go to the N. Rim so it is much less crowded!). Sounds like a great upcoming trip.
Thanks again for the info!
