The Ventures - extremely underrated

The thread about what music gets you cranking up the volume had me going through my Ventures collection again. I never see them mentioned anywhere when great bands are talked about. As a kid, I listened to my mom's record of them and fell in love with their sound.

People think they are a surf rock band, but that's only a sample of their work. Walk Don't Run came out in 1960 and is cited as the birth of the genre, but I actually like a lot of their other stuff as well.

The Telstar album is awesome. Songs like Green Onions, Tequila, and Red River Rock are great.

Rebel Rouser
Pipeline
Honky Tonk

Apache

Rawhide

Hawaii 5-O

Wipeout

Those are just a few of the songs I'm blasting currently. I can't get enough of their rhythm style. A lot of people mention some of their popular songs were covers. That doesn't bother me. I like their covers better than the originals most of the time.

And I also just found out they are going to be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame this year.

It's about damn time!

Al, that's awesome. My parents had some Ventures records too and listening to them was always among my favorites.

I immediately thought of the Pipeline and the Ventures when I saw the thread about turning up the radio. I think there are several Ventures cover groups in Japan that I read about somewhere.
Surf guitar is great, I like just about any incarnation of the style, old and new.

The Ventures, Freddie King and Jimmy Reed taught me how to play lead, rhythm and bass guitar.

After The Kingston Trio and Dylan had earlier introduced me to all the chords.

Saw them live at Club Foot back in the 80's.
It was a great show.
They must have played for over 2 hours, even repeating a couple of songs because the crowd kept calling for encores.

That was a cool place to see them too.
