Hmm, the newest University of Texas System school in the works? Not so fast says UH.
Members of the University of Houston System Board of Regents and other supporters of the University of Houston lashed out Thursday against the University of Texas System's plans to expand in Houston, calling the idea a "Trojan horse" and passing a resolution expressing "concern."

What do you think?

McRaven has said he doesn’t know how the land will be used; a task force is being convened to come up with a vision. But McRaven said Houston is attractive because of its size and prominence in the health care, energy and engineering fields.

He dismissed complaints that UT was encroaching on UH’s territory, saying that two major research schools can coexist near each other. In Los Angeles, he said, the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles are mere miles away.

They're right to be pissed. If UT is spending money in Houston, it should be to support UTHSC for 2 reasons. 1 - so we can continue to dominate and obliterate any other institution in the world in medical research, and 2 - UH is a strong up and coming institution. I don't know if it's still fair to label it a commuter school. If you are going to call it a commuter school, it's probably the best commuter school in the country. I don't get what the point would be to open up another UTSA there. It's only going to dilute UH.

And of course, I love McRaven, but the USC and UCLA analogy is ridiculous because, as the UH chancellor pointed out, one is private and the other is public. If we're going there, the counterpart would be Rice and Texas.

Edit: I take back that UTSA thing...a UT undergrad school in Houston could become the System's 2nd favorite college after Austin (after UTHSC). The UCLA to Cal Berkley.
