Time to take an indepth look at the horns OL and DL going into the fall practices.

Offensive Line:
LT Ulatoski / McGaskey
LG Tanner / Huey
OC Hall / Burnette
RG Dockery / Mitchell
RT Hix / Allen

Incoming freshman: Poehlman OT, Snow OG, Buchanan OT should all redshirt unless injuries dictate a need to play. Buchanan came in for the spring and would be the logical choice to play 1st if needed.

Ulatoski started final 7 games at RT in 06 and started 9 games there in 07. Started at LT in bowl game vs ASU and will start at LT in 08. At 6-8 310 he has the frame and experience to be a very good pass blocker at LT and to protect Colt's backside.

Tanner started 9 games in 07 at LG including last 4 games of the season. Listed 6-4 300 he will likely be the starter at LG in 08. His backup will be rising sophomore Huey who at 6-5 315 played in all 13 games at OG in 07.

Hall started 12 games as a sophomore in 07 starting at each of the 5 OL position in at least 1 game. He looks to be starting OC in 08 but could move to other positions if needed. He is listed at 6-4 300. His backup is Burnette who could start at OC if Hall is needed elsewhere. Burnette appeared in all 13 games in 07 and started the last 2. He is a very good backup at OC with huge potential, and is listed at 6-3 320.

Dockery started 1st 6 games of 06 before ACL injury in OU game. In 07 he returned healthy and played in all 13 games, starting 11 at RG. He will be UT's lone senior offensive lineman and is listed at 6-4 320. Dockery's backup is sophomore Mitchell who played in 12 games as a frosh in 07 and is listed at 6-5 300. Huey and Mitchell who serve as primary backups at OG positions also were teammates at Kilgore HS.

Hix played all 13 games at RT as a true frosh in 07 starting the bowl game. He returns as the starter at RT in 08. He has prototypical OT size and is listed at 6-7 320. His primary backup should be Allen who played 9 games at OT his true frosh season in 07. At 6-5 320 he has the size to play OT and will do so in 08. He may also play OG down the road.

If my math is comprehensive and correct, UT brings back 45 starts from last season (out of a possible 65). 4 of the 5 primary backups saw action last season in nearly all of the 13 games. Only exception is McGaskey who redshirted last season. This OL unit will build upon where it left itself at the end of last season after the injuries to Hills and Griffin. The future outlook for this unit is also very bright as there will only be one senior in 08 (Dockery) and his backup will have 2 years of experience at the same position when 09 rolls around.

Defensive line:
DE Orakpo / Jones
DT Miller / Lewis
DT Houston / Alexander / Wilcoxon
DE Melton / Acho

**this lineup will need tweaking

Ellis and Higgins are not on the current roster. True frosh Randall and Humphrey could see playing time this year even with Houston and Lewis spinning inside. Muschamp wants to create pressure on the opposing QB this year and primarily by getting a 4 man push up front. He prefers quicker smaller DT's for his schemes and moving Houston and likely Lewis inside will give him just that. This is contrast to the bigger space eating DT's of UT's past including Wright, Okam, Tubbs.

Orakpo played in all 13 games in 05 as a backup and earned Big 12 defensive freshman of the year honors. He played in all 13 games in 06 as a backup again to Crowder and Robison. He entered 07 as the most experienced DE on the roster and looked to have a breakout year. After an illegal chop block sprained his knee in the opening game he returned for the OU game and played less than 100% down the stretch. He finished the season starting the last 7 games and compiling 9 TFL, 5.5 sacks, 12 pressures, 2 PBU, and a FF. Appearing the healthiest he had all season in the bowl game he was UT's defensive MVP with 3 TFL, 2 sacks, and a pressure. He returns in 08 at 100% health and looking to have that breakout season that he missed out on last season due to injury. After coming in his frosh season at 210 Orakpo has added muscle and is now listed at 6-4 260.

Miller appeared in 10 games as a true frosh in 05. He then played in 13 games as a sophomore in 06 and started the final 6 games of the season. He appeared in all 13 games as a junior in 07 and served basically as a co-starter to Okam and Lokey. Has played in 36 career games, starting 6, and has compiled 14 TFL, 4.5 sacks, 16 pressures, 2 PBU, and a FF. Like Orakpo he enters his senior season 100% healthy and with a bit of a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. Also like Orakpo he is a workout warrior and considered one of the strongest player on UT's roster in 08. at 6-2 300 he is a big man with a motor.

Houston appeared in 11 games at DE as a true frosh in 06. In 07 he appeared in 13 games and started 11 of them at DE. He comes back in 08 with 24 games of experience and 11 starts. Although listed as a DE there is strong indictation that he will be used on the interior as DT in 08. Muschamp wants the best players on the field. By moving Houston over he not only accomplishes that but also solves his issues at DT concerning depth. at 6-2 275 Houston will be a force on the inside and ready to showcase what he can do. We could expect to see him play both DT and DE this fall.

Lewis played 8 games in 05 as a backup DE as a true frosh. He played in 13 games as a soph in 06 and started 3 after Robison was injured. He started the 1st 6 games of 07 before also being sidelined due to injury. Like Houston he could move inside. You could expect to see Lewis and Houston lining up next to one another as well in order to get the best 4 players on the line of scrimmage. Overall in his career he has compiled 17 TFL, 5 sacks, 22 pressures, 4 PBU, 1 FF, and 3 FR. Like Orakpo he comes off an injury season with a bit of a chip on his shoulder and ready to prove what he can do. At 6-4 265 he is the most versatile player on the DL and can play a number of positions including special teams if needed.

Jones played 11 games as a RS frosh in 07. He comes off a shoulder injury and should be an impact player and valuable backup in 08. He is listed at 6-3 260.

Melton comes back in 08 for one last season to show what he can do before leaving for the NFL. With Houston and Lewis likely spinning inside he could see more playing time in 08. He has a big frame at 6-3 265 and provides both size and speed being that he was a RB his true frosh season.

Even though the DL lost Okam and Lokey from 07 they bring back 4 seniors (Orakpo, Miller, Lewis, Melton). Houston and Alexander are both juniors and bring 3 total years of experience as backups with them. As mentioned previously Houston was a starter at DE last season. Thus this DL returns a starter in Houston spinning inside, a starter in Orakpo returning 100% healthy, a co-starter last year in Miller, and a 10 start senior in Lewis who can play both DE and DT. The horns could potentially lineup Orakpo/Miller/Houston/Lewis which represents 3 seniors and 1 juniors who are basically all returning starters.

The DL should be the strength of the defense in 08 and likely the entire team.

Overall there appears to be much to be excited about regarding these 2 units for UT this fall. Since much of the game depends on the play in the "trenches" this could bode well for both UT's offense and defense this upcoming season.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Huey- Tanner, Tanner- Huey. Lots of subbing, for all positions, I hope. Especially in the heat of Sept.

Nice post and analysis, thanks. I agree that it all "starts" in the trenches.
Four weeks from now, we'll be sweating and yelling!

My hope is that Rak becomes the kind of force that Brackens was. Tall order. When Tony was in, the offense was disrupted. While he was out or hurt, the defense was not a threat to the QB.

Actually, pressure from BOTH sides would be nice! But Orakpo should be a difference maker.

Don't count on Allen beating out Hix. And that is a good thing.

Your summary of DT highlights that we will be even thinner in 09. Therefore it is essential that Humphrey and Randall play this year.

Good observation. The summary was to look at the OL and DL units in 08. But to go further and look in 09 we know the OL unit will only lose Dockery...but replacing him with Huey and then likely Snow behind him will mean that the OL will be a solid experience unit in 09.

On DL they will lose Miller, Orakpo, Lewis, and Melton. They will bring back Houston, Jones, Acho, Carter, Alexander, Humphrey, Randall, and Wilcoxon. There are some unknowns this year....Will Lewis play more DT or DE? Who will play more, Melton or Acho? Will Acho continue to improve and gain in size similar to the track that Orakpo took in his early career? If so Acho can continue to backup this season, gain experience, and look to be the guy opposite Jones in 09. How will Carter play this year if at all? He could be that young backup gaining experience behind Acho in 09. How good is Wilcoxon?...I haven't seen him play yet.

Likely depth chart for DL in 09:

DE Jones / Carter / Jones (true frosh)
DT Alexander / Randall
DT Houston / Wilcoxon / Humphrey
DE Acho / Okafor (true frosh)

DT does not look to be thin in 09 but we really have to wait and see what we get out of Wilcoxon, Randall, and Humphrey this season.

DE we will lose 3 seniors and that is the area they will see a bigger drop off. You can't replace an Orakpo but Jones and Acho may be close combined compared to what we will see this year with Orakpo and Melton or Orakpo and Lewis. I put the true frosh in there b/c 1 or 2 will need to play at DE in 09 similar to what we will see with Humphrey and Randall this year.

4 seniors on DL in 08 and basically 4 starters return. in 09 there will be 2 seniors on DL and could be seeing 2 senior starters and 2 junior starters with Houston likely being the only returning starter but the other 3 having served as primary backups in 08.

Has Howard moved to DE full-time? I am just not sure how they will fit in this season but I would think Carter will be a valuable backup at DE with Houston and Lewis spinning inside. My post above shows Carter in the 2 deep mix in 09 for sure.

very good informative post. I just do not see [with the loss of 4 seniors] the DL even being strenth of defense little on of the team. lose only one LB,

I think Snow was here in the spring as well and seems like i remember the coaches were very impressed with him during spring drills. He may figure into the mix. i believe they had him playing center most of the spring.

Has it been determined that Lewis will move inside to DT? I don't like that move if true. Too much speed to give up on the edge.

I like Lewis. I think he's solid. Among our current DEs, I don't think you give up too much speed if you move him inside even 100% of the time.

I think a lot of the Lewis speed mystique is the same as the Drew Kelson and Derek Lokey mystique. All three of them are remembered by a lot of fans for one or two key plays that really showcased their speed. Lewis for the tackle on Peterson, Kelson for "Did you see him running step for step with Reggie Bush in the Rose Bowl?" and Lokey for his play in the Michigan backfield in Rose Bowl I. It's not that any of these three players are slow -- it's that they took good angles and were helped by the offensive players "cooperating" with them in the way that they ran those three plays. I wouldn't bet on any of our three guys in a footrace with Adrian Peterson, Reggie Bush, or Mike Hart.

Don't get me wrong -- I like all 3 of these players. I just don't think that the body of work that these guys have put together is all that impressive, all things considered. Injuries, coaching decisions, etc all had big impacts on Kelson and Lokey.

Of these 3 guys, I think Lewis will have the better body of work after 4 years on the field. I also think he can do that from the DT spot frequently this year.

It's funny how many really promising ends we have at this point. We got really lucky when Crowder and Robison panned out as well as they did, because we sure whiffed on a lot of DE prospects for a few years there in the Jarvis Moss days.

Allen does NOT and will NOT play RT... nor guard. He started all spring at LT and will remain there behind Ulatoski, who had the knee surgery in the spring. Over the summer, he has gotten down to 305, which should really help his agility and ability to contribute if Ulatoski has some issues with the knee.

It would seem more likely to be that Acho would be the one to spell Orakpo and Jones for Melton than the other way around, but I could be wrong. I know Melton has supposedly looked good in practice. However, unless he has learned to play contain on runs - last season was his first on D, I know, so he definitely can still improve - but, if he doesn't, I don't look for him to be playing as much, especially in potential running situations, as the season progresses.

If we're not getting that pressure from the 2nd DE - watch for BOOM to line up Sergio on the LOS like at the weakside 5. Just a crazy hunch.....

Good stats and analysis!!

I hope that we can rotate an *** load of people on the D-line though, rather than a typical 2 deep. OU and Tech both have monster lines so we will need to be especially fresh and creative to crack them.

You can't get to the QB from Cleveland. You need to travel the shortest distance possible. You can still disrupt the play by coming up to the line and faking. That way the opponent never knows what to expect.

Great post-- thanks!

I have a bit of concern that one of our areas of least experience is at backup on the left at OT. Colt may be at increased risk while we are spelling starters. Overall, though, the line picture (which I agree is the cornerstone of a team) looks promising.

And my memory also says that Allen was a LT back-up. But I hope that Mac will be cross-training everyone he can. Worked out well last season with Hall.

Greg Davis on Tuesday:

In reply to:

From Davis' quote, I would presume that he envisions backing up:

(1) Hall at C with Burnette;

(2) Dockery and Tanner at G with Huey; and

(3) Ulatoski and Hix at T with Allen.

The potential for players to break through on the O-line is amazing. Greg D mentioned 13 or 14 guys, and he wasn't kidding.

Ulie-Tanner-Hall-Dockery-Hix
Allen-Huey-Burnett-Snow- McGaskey
Buchanan- Mitchell-Smith- Moore- Poehlmann

Poehlmann is the only one who wasn't on campus this spring, (plus he needs to bulk up from 247), so he may redshirt, barring big injuries.

I'd wager some serious bank that Snow, Poehlmann, and Buchanon all redshirt this season... as most OLs should.

I would think you're right PFD. Huey and Allen are top backups at OG and OT positions respectively. They will fill the open slot that opens up 1st if needed. Burnette is unquestionably the #1 backup at OC.

Behind Allen will be McGaskey and behind Huey has to be Mitchell since he played some last year.

I too hope all 3 frosh RS.

The only two reasons Snow and Buchanon will not shirt, even though both were on campus this spring, is if there are serious injuries in the group ahead of them, or they are so good they are pushing the starters. Almost every Longhorn lineman has redshirted up to now, but three did not last yea, so you never know.
