The trajectory of UT basketball

Does not look good. Sometimes, in every facet of sports/business there comes
a period where introspection shows that the leader needs to move on. Even if
he has been good in the past, when the present does not portend improvement
then it is time. That time appears now. I expect that this next year will be the
last one of the Barnes era, and I think a change is due.
He has been a good coach, but not exceptional. We probably will never get an
exceptional coach because we aren't a BB school, but we now need another
guy to take his shot.

Granted there are some big name coaches that are beyond our reach, but I believe Texas definitely can get an exceptional basketball coach. There are a number of them currently at lesser programs that I would love to have here.

Exceptional coach doesn't necessarily equate to a high profile coach.

This is the first post about Barnes that I totally agree, especially about " because we aren't a BB school". I hope that can change too.

It's kind of funny/sad that we get off calling other programs "lesser" when it's kind of obvious that the men's bball job at Texas is exactly that. We've never had a men's coach who the masses would consider "great." Barnes wasn't even the best coach available in the Spring/Summer of 1998.

We need to abandon the Texags mentality that a rich program with lots of TV revenue equals success. I'd venture to say that the fans of Butler, Gonzaga, VCU, etc. think that Texas is a "lesser" program when it comes to basketball, hence, no reason for their coaches to make a demotion move to Austin for more money.

A couple Elite-8's does not a program make. But for entertainment's sake, I'd like to see what Barnes can do in 2013-14 with the squad that he and Lanier put together, now that the fat is trimmed. He either has a plan or he's pissing into the wind, so this is where we'll find out his mettle and worth. I think he sticks around if we go near .500 again, but if it happens for 2 more seasons, he'll be shown the door.

Whenever I think about the "football school" debate I think of University of Florida, Ohio State and a few others. Yes, the tradition and enthusiasm is less than football, but why do those "football schools" contest for or win NCAA basketball championships, and we think it's just out of reach due to football? I'm not countering the above comments, but am questioning why we can't pull it off also.

Jag......... good points, but UT has never consistently supported basketball with large, loud
crowds, and the rest of the country hardly thinks of us as regular contenders. OTOH, Florida
and Ohio State are contenders on a more regular basis. Not a lot, but more.
UT is more like OU or Nebraska in that our football history suggests excellence (with exceptions)
but basketball? Nah.

I was using the term "lesser" in a relative sense - as in, lower in terms of rank or quality: "the lesser aristocracy" - and I am sorry if that obvious point was beyond the comprehension of some.

Clearly Texas is not a "great" basketball school, but it's ludicrous to assert that there are no lesser programs that employ some very good coaches. Far better coaches than are currently employed at The University of Texas.

I personally don't consider Butler, or VCU as lesser basketball programs than Texas and I would never expect a coach like Brad Stevens, or Shaka Smart to come here. There are however, plenty of other impressive fish in the sea. Fish swimming around at relatively lesser levels.

I believe that this will all occur in 2014. Deloss gets his annuity/cash/whatever in August,
retires, and the new AD hires new basketball and baseball coaches (assuming that Augie
doesn't pull another miracle before then), Mack hangs 'em up, and it's a clean sweep.
