The Thin Beast

Another exciting Olympic event-that third game was total domination. The first two were neck and neck, I don't know what changed in the third-were the Brazilians tired?

What changed was Jethro freaking Clampit said "enough is enough", took over the game, and took the gold medal.

Seriously, when he gets hot, that's what it looks like, but that's the most dominant display I've ever seen in a big match, Ever. By anyone.

I came here to post a "Phil freaking Dalhausser" thread, but AccurateHorn beat me to it.

Man, when we met Phil at Aussie's back in 05 , hangin' out & playing in the week preceding his & then partner Nick Lucena's first ever AVP win out at Auditorium Shores, we all knew he was special. He's really come a long way, though, since then.

There's no doubt there's not a better player in the world now. The best part is that he's not just the typical lumbering "big guy" of the old days. The kid can do it all. Biggest and best of the biggest and best blocks on the beach. Fast. Incredible hands. Great footwork. Great defense when he does drop off. Great jumpe serve. Smart. He's the total package.

He put Jaws in a phone booth in the 3rd. That was sick. What did he have...something like 7 blocks in a 15-4 game? Are you kidding me?

BTW, the humble Phil you see on tv in the interviews is the real deal. It's no act. He's a down to earth, quiet kid, who really doesn't know how good he is.

He has no idea.

Refreshing, huh?

If someone wasn't paying attention, they might have thought those 3-4 blocks in the third game were replays. 15-4 in a rally game would be like 50-3 in football. It's so hard to create a score separation when you are always siding out.

I don't know if Dalhausser or Rogers figured Fabio out or if Fabio was just getting tired. Phil was just putting his arms in the right places every time. I feel bad for Tod Rogers. He didn't have a good match, but he did enough to let Phil take over. He's one of the smaller guys out there, but he's such an amazing athlete and his understanding of the game and mental focusness is probably the best out there.

you guys who are experts, please help me out. I admit I am old and out of touch, but I seem to remember in the distant past of my youth that a side could only score in volleyball when it was serving. When did it change? Or did I just remember it wrong?

The big changes were in 2001 and they gutted the heart of the game, shrinking the talent pool dramatically, narrowing the paths to success, and greatly reducing the entertainment value for the fan. I'm talking about the let serve, rally scoring, the smaller court, antennae on the net, looser handsetting, lighter, "balloonier" ball, etc. They dumbed the game down for the bigger player and ran the smaller (6'-6'1") more highly skilled player out of the pro game. A lot of it was done for tv. Some of it I have no explanation for.

Where there used to be many different ways to win in bvb, now there is one formula. Where epic struggles and tense battles with comebacks and incredible rallies were once frequent, now those things are very rare. You never used to have a match or a tourney end on a missed serve or a sideout. You do now. Pathetic. A consequence of this is that now jumpserving is far less agressive and less frequent than with the old rules. It's just too risky. Serving under the old rules was spectacular. Most of those great servers were run out of the game by the new rules.

I'll always love bvb, but the old game was better on many levels.

you are correct mandingo they changed everything at that point. it also broke up my favorite team todd rogers and dax holdren, there was nothing like being able to go down to east beach on a saturday morning in sb and get a game with two of the top players from the avp, a team that was small but that could beat with their sideout ability and defense. changing the size of the court killed their game, they had been partners since they were 13 years old.
