The Stimulus Package

I need to know how much I'm getting 1st. If anyone can tell me based off the fact that I have 4 kids and made less than 20k last year. If I get 600 or less, I will pay down debt, or past due on bills. I think if the gov't wanted me to actually stimulate the economy, I would get around 1k (I'm not wanting a gov't handout) just trying to make a point. But if they give me 1k, I can pay bills AND a dvd player or i-pod etc. Give me less, I pay down my bills/debt, and i'm right back in the same place I was before the rebate. My gut tells me this is like our healthcare system, its going to put a band-aid on the problem, not actually address the cause of the problem, and we'll be stuck in this economic condition until something proper is done. This is just my holiday inn express opinion.

Bad idea....we should have tax relief directed toward businesses to stimulate capital spending, business expansion and job growth.

Couple the above with serious spending cuts that lowers deficit projections and you have a recipe for success. The only problem....this doesn't buy votes.

As for me.....I'm going to "borrow" my anticipated rebate amount from my money market and fund my IRA before April 15. When the rebate check arrives, I'll repay my money market.

Sorry....no stimulus from me.

Hurray!

Poor people get $600 to spend on beer and cigarettes and maybe pay off an electric and/or cable bill. Pointless and stupid on the macroeconmic level, but will buy many votes for sitting politicians. After all, how can you not vote for a guy who bought you a round?

this is horrible this plan.

At least it's bipartisan horrible so we can all agree its horrible.

How about instead of giving the money away we use it to fund SS or something.

Or how about we let our government officials find yet another creative way to waste it!!!

This and the mortgage "bailout" plan shows how retarded Washington is on so many different levels. First, are we really in a "recession" yet? Second, you want to stimulate the economy, try cutting capital gains tax down to 10% or even nothing, it would be like putting the economy on steroids. Don't worry, it won't even get MENTIONED. $600? Wow.

The best part is, since Bush and the Repubs didn't have the balls to stick to their guns and make the 05 tax cuts permanent, we're all gonna get doubly screwed in 2009-2010 when there really IS a recession.

Actually, buying a lot of **** we don't need is "good" for the economy, at least using how we measure the economy.

yes this is a terrible idea. it's going to cause the markets to crash, electric currents to reverse, tsunamis to hit NY and LA simultaneously, the sewers to all back up, mass hysteria (wait, we already have that), and the 'new economic power du jour (take your pick - Japan, China, India, or the EU) will jump on us and buy our entire country for cheap then turn us all into their indentured servants.

or maybe it's not nearly as bad of an idea as y'all smart people think.

If I spend my entire check at Best Buy or at Toys 'R' Us what percentage stimulates China's economy?

I originally had an impulse to purchase a plasma TV for the family with my windfall, but since i think this stimulus package is foolhardy and stupid, i will probably just put the whole lot into my children's college fund.

This is just turning into a Buy votes proposition. Its not about helping the economy, its Why should that person get more than me?

I've read that richer people would spend the money but poor would just pay debts and vice versa. There isnt one rule that applies to an entire group.

I pay for it and get nothing back.

Good practice for Social Security when I get ****** out of that too.

Simple vote buying with tax dollars and it wont make any difference in the end.

Heres a better idea: quit wasting our tax dollars and we will all have more to spend on plasma tvs. Deal?

i don't think it matters whether the rebates will work or not, or whether they're a good idea. what matters is who will get the credit for trying to stave off a recession.

hook'em
