I could not agree more with this. The whole subsidies thing is such a joke.
People from both political parties, even the lunatic fringes of both parties, seem to agree that lessening our dependence on foreign oil would be a great economic feat for our country. The govt ought to offer billions in incentives to companies working on the natural gas to liquid technologies.
Theoretically, we could leave the middle east and africa all together. If we used natural gas to fuel our fleets and cars, our domestic oil production could probably keep up with our other oil needs. The technology could be sold around the world. We could become an exporter. Talk about a change in our economic problems.
The reason I think we should stress this first and foremost is that I do not believe that we are going to win the race on solar and wind. The game is titlted too far in the favor of other nations. Plus, the reality is that those industries will help with electricity generation but do nothing to wean us off of oil.
Nat gas, ifit can be converted, can be used immediately in our current distribution infrastructure. The cost is also amazing. Last I read, nat gas is an equivalent of $1.80 per gallon of gasoline. This frees up billions of dollars in our economy.
I really have no idea why our country doesn't fully embrace this segment of our industry. I personally have zero stake in the industry, but I see so much poetential good from it. And it is not a distant dream or dependent on better technology etc. We have hundreds of years worth of it. Why this isnt a no brainer is beyond me.
