The Selection Committee Idiocy Thread

1. They dicked Rice.

2. How is Georgia a national seed? They're 16th in RPI and they went 0-2 in their conference tournament.

3. Take a look at the Long Beach Regional... Beach, San Diego (ranked #7) as the 2, and Cal (ranked #15) as the 3. All three teams are in Boyd Nation's top 10. Yeesh.

4. I still don't see how OU and Arkansas get bids, but Oregon State gets left out. Boyd has them #22. Being the 2-time defending champs has to mean something if they're a borderline candidate.

I did this on another thread but what's the harm in doing it again?

A big, good old fashioned **** YOU to the committee for putting UC-Irvine in Lincoln. Knowing we're gonna have to get through them to get a more favorable draw in LSU gives me the creeps.

I stuck this on another thead as well.

Folks, start asking how some of these other teams got in the tournament..........as well as OU if you must ask the question.

I am tired of the smaller conference getting to pimp out big name opponents for high rpi numbers but never have to face the best pitchers.

The committee screwed the Big 12. Let's roll it up on them.

Go Huskers, Tigers, Horns, Aggie, Pokes, & Sooners.

Oregon State's RPI and w/l pretty much speaks for itself........

Can't say go Aggies and go Horns at the same time. A&M is square in the middle of the Horns' path to Omaha.

But it would not hurt my feelings to see Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma do well. Hard for me to root for Nebraska because I know a guy who graduated from Nebraska (the only Husker grad that I know personally), and he's the biggest dick in the world with regard to sports. He hates all UT sports teams with a purple passion because of the recent history between the UT and NU football programs. He thinks every UT coach, player, and fan is a classless idiot and that Texas gets by on name only in every sport. After listening to him openly root for Texas to fail for the past 7 years, it's extremely difficult for me to hope that his team does well, even for the sake of the conference.

As for Michigan hosting, the chairman of the committee said it's because they wanted to have a "national balance" of hosts in the tournament. Screw national balance. You already pandered to those whining Yankees by condensing the season. You don't have to rob a more deserving team of a regional as yet another means of pacifying them. Enough is enough. The NCAA is making it obvious that they don't want any more perennial national powers in college baseball.

No, he's definitely a Nebraska fan. I was shocked myself when I met him because I know Nebraska fans have a reputation for class and dignity. But let's just say it has not gone over well with him that the Huskers keep narrowly losing to the Horns on the football field, and that has affected his perception of every other UT sports team. We cannot discuss baseball without him bringing up something classless that some random Texas football player did in a game back in 1999 or Texas not showing up for the trophy ceremony in Omaha 4 years ago, even though Augie apologized profusely and the NCAA explained that the whole thing was a misunderstanding. He never misses an opportunity to point out something he dislikes about Texas. I know I should be able to separate one guy from the rest of the fanbase, but since he's the only one I actually know, that's kinda hard to do. No offense to the rest of you.

Then let me edit.......and forgive me for not checking the bracket sooner:

Go Aggies until you meet the Horns. Then bow down......as you have 4 times previously this season.

Just found this: summary of eight computer rankings

This pretty much shows you how freakin' awful the RPI is for baseball.

The RPI has San Diego 35th...none of the other computer rankings have them worse than 17th, and USD is in the top 10 of the major polls. Yet the committee looks at the RPI and gives them a 2-seed.

The RPI has Irvine 33rd...none of the other computer rankings have them worse than 14th, and the coaches' poll has them 12th. Yet the committee looks at the RPI and gives them a 2-seed.

The RPI has Georgia 16th... none of the other computer rankings have them better than 25th, yet they somehow get a national seed.

The RPI has NC State 9th...none of the other computer rankings have them better than 21st, which is right in line with their human poll rankings, yet they somehow get a 1-seed.

Florida 11th in the RPI, yet no better than 24th in any other ranking, including the human polls.

UNC-Wilmington is 28th in the RPI... their other computer rankings average in the 50's, yet they're a 2-seed.

Clemson is 26 in the RPI, yet no better than 54th according to any other system.

When there are this many outliers relative to the general consensus, and those outliers follow regional patters, that's a huge, flashing, ALL-CAPS sign telling you that your tool is broken.

Hey Lets Host the Frozen Four Hockey Tourney next year. And the next year lets host the lacrosse championship in Houston. Now thats balance you idiots @ the NCAA office.

I saw that. They are doing it most everywhere in the South as well. They stuck Southern Miss, UNO and LSU in one regional. Only Tulane escaped (to FSU). They are making sure areas packed with great teams (Cal, Texas, Louisiana, etc) aren't spread out, eliminate each other and thereby giving the whining babies in Michigan and elsewhere a shot. It's pathetic.

The RPI is biased because, absent sufficient inter-regional matchups, the RPI will favor the region that has the most number of teams.

The components to RPI are winning percentage, opponents' winning percentage, and opponents' opponents' winning percentage. When you have a small number of teams within a region (west) that tend to only play each other, that mashes those second two numbers (OW% and OOW%) close to .500 for everyone. When you have a large number of teams in a region (southeast), you'll have much more variation in OW% and OOW%.

The bottom line is those guys need to look 22 year old kids in the eye and say "We don't care about what you fairly earned this season because we have more important political goals." **** them.

BV - I agree that the RPI has some serious flaws. However, it seems like you should credit the committee for going against the RPI in some of those cases if you're going to rip on them for going with it in other cases. (Clemson not making it, etc.)

Does every team have a shot at an automatic bid? Are there teams that their only shot at post season play is an at large bid?
