As Trump cranks up the effort to build a wall along the border with Mexico, it is largely forgotten that just ten years ago we passed a bill to do that on a smaller scale with little controversy. H.R. 6061 passed the Senate with over 80 votes. The government built over 600 miles of it before it was defunded when the Dems took control of the WH and Congress after the 2008 elections.

Democrats voting "YEA" on the Secure Fence Act of 2006 included: Barak Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, and Joe Biden. Even Ted Kennedy abstained.

I'd be willing to bet that most of those Senators also supported a traditional definition of marriage at that time too. Isn't it amazing how far to Left the Dems have moved in the last ten years (witness the insanity at the DNC elections this week).

My reading is that it was a little trickier than that.

There was a second bill (I think it was a DHS funding bill) which also included funding for fencing. In this bill, our own senator, KBH, added some vague language that gave then DHS head, Chertoff, an out on the fence building. Which the WH then used as negotiating leverage in a trade bill involving MX. They got what they wanted, and fence building stalled, never to be resumed. My view may here might be overly simplistic, or maybe this is only one small part.

From my perspective, it seems that it was the BMDs (for both sides) who wanted the fencing stopped, for their own reasons. I am not sure we ever get the full and complete story on something like this. A senator is not going to tell us, "Yeah, I got a call from this guy who gave my campaign $200k."

But whatever. It's a new ballgame now.
