The Second Best Thing About This Past Weekend...

Aside from the best thing about this past weekend, which is that several supremely-talented and bright young men will have the opportunity to earn degrees from The University, I must say that the second best thing is to have yet another opportunity to laugh at aggy.

A few days ago I was thinking about the long offseason and what I was going to do--maybe fire up NCAA 09 again and run a Legend through to Superstar in Madden, or run my created players through Dynasty into Madden. Or maybe I would stop thinking about football for a while and renovate the patio like Mrs. ACuriae wants. Or maybe I would get into woodworking. Maybe I'll still do those things.

But a friend asked me this morning if I'd read any of the aggy responses to Texas Junior Day and I remembered how entertaining aggy could be in the offseason. There's full-blown aggy misery (e.g. "You got to be kidding me: Ahmad Dixon commits to sips"). There's blind aggy hypocrisy (e.g. "Good, really glad we didnt waste a scholorship on that scrub" re: Case McCoy after multiple threads on how much better and manlier Case is than Colt).

Then there's aggy denial (e.g. "Not a big loss if your an Aggie" re: Trey Hopkins; "we weren't after terrell...we want white, who is taller and faster" and "We're after more than just White...and Terrell isn't in that group" re: Darius Terrell; "We didn't offer him" re: Taylor Bible). And the ever-present aggy optimism (e.g. "Obviously it's super-early, but do we have a realistic shot at Jeffcoat?" followed by "jeffcoat...lock").

Finally, there's that aggy je ne sais quoi (e.g. "Do you think the Aggies will actually consider [Steve Spurrier], and if so, how do you think he would compete against Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in recruiting?" and "Jimmy Johnson will be the next AD"), though I haven't read any recent examples of it.

Maybe the offseason won't be that long after all!

The REAL second best thing about the last couple of days is giving Bob Stoops a one finger salute. aggy's not good enough to spend time worrying about what effect this is having on them. I guess it is a chuckle that they've done the Junior Day thing and no player even thought enough of them to commit as a safety valve in case that player doesn't get an offer from a school he really wants to go to.

Make no mistake about it...Stoops and staff were convinced that they, not us, would control the fortunes of recruiting north of Waco. okie likes to think of themselves as the 800 pound recruiting gorilla in the Metroplex. What Mack, Coach Boom, and our other coaches have done in two days is deliver a message to Norman...UT is THE University Of Texas recruiting power, north, south, east, or west. okie will get some talent out of Texas...they always do...but anyone north of the muddy Red expecting a clean sweep deluded themselves.

okie needs wide receivers and linebackers badly, and there's plenty to go around. They'll get the ones that used to go to aggy, unless Tech and Baylor beat them to it, which is realistic now.

Like I said, the effect the last two days has on okie is the second best thing to me.

I can agree with you objectively. Subjectively, though, aggy is usually much more vocal than 0U when it comes to stuff like this and, therefore, more entertaining to me.

This post is worthless without pics... er um, links.

I really don't know why stoops or some of our fans thought we would get shut down in the DFW area. We have done pretty well there historically.

Here is the third best thing: the Sooner response to Mack Brown plowing Bob Stoops' *** into the ground this past weekend.

Taking these kids out of North Texas is the smartest thing Mack has ever done. Leave Stoops to fight it out in East Texas and South Texas with LSU and A&M and Arkansas and Oklahoma State.
