Aside from the best thing about this past weekend, which is that several supremely-talented and bright young men will have the opportunity to earn degrees from The University, I must say that the second best thing is to have yet another opportunity to laugh at aggy.
A few days ago I was thinking about the long offseason and what I was going to do--maybe fire up NCAA 09 again and run a Legend through to Superstar in Madden, or run my created players through Dynasty into Madden. Or maybe I would stop thinking about football for a while and renovate the patio like Mrs. ACuriae wants. Or maybe I would get into woodworking. Maybe I'll still do those things.
But a friend asked me this morning if I'd read any of the aggy responses to Texas Junior Day and I remembered how entertaining aggy could be in the offseason. There's full-blown aggy misery (e.g. "You got to be kidding me: Ahmad Dixon commits to sips"). There's blind aggy hypocrisy (e.g. "Good, really glad we didnt waste a scholorship on that scrub" re: Case McCoy after multiple threads on how much better and manlier Case is than Colt).
Then there's aggy denial (e.g. "Not a big loss if your an Aggie" re: Trey Hopkins; "we weren't after terrell...we want white, who is taller and faster" and "We're after more than just White...and Terrell isn't in that group" re: Darius Terrell; "We didn't offer him" re: Taylor Bible). And the ever-present aggy optimism (e.g. "Obviously it's super-early, but do we have a realistic shot at Jeffcoat?" followed by "jeffcoat...lock").
Finally, there's that aggy je ne sais quoi (e.g. "Do you think the Aggies will actually consider [Steve Spurrier], and if so, how do you think he would compete against Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in recruiting?" and "Jimmy Johnson will be the next AD"), though I haven't read any recent examples of it.
Maybe the offseason won't be that long after all!
