The Ryan Perrilloux Factor

Bill in Sinton

Maybe this should be a new phase for recruits that verbal and then on the last day don't honor your verbal. I really don't blame Oklahoma on the Nelson because they just saw an opportunity to get a good player. We did that when Snead decided to come after RP backed off on the last day. It is the players that break the agreement.

RP was the worse not only because of waiting for the last minute. He deceived one player by telling him he was going to MIssissippi State and they both could go there together. The other player wanted MIssissippi but brought RP's suggestion and signed with MIssissippi State and right after RP went with LSU. This was downright deceitful.
RP as he announced said "Texas fans will get over it."
He was right. We got a QB that led us to 45 wins with four great seasons including a shot at the NC.

Snead changed his commit almost a month before signing day IIRC or maybe even more and he did it when Florida went after and got Tebow's commit after telling Snead they were done with QB's once he committed. Pulling stunts on signing day or right before are what leave teams out in the cold and leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I don't recall being jilted at the alter. I recall it happening the last week, and that there were clear signs of a switch around Jan.15. RP's step father was quoted as telling a recruting service "we don't owe Mack Brown anything" in response to a question about keeping his commitment. I remember that to be around mid Jan.

Brantley was the next year, and really we lost him because of family connections, plus he decommitted well before signing day and didnt leave us out in the cold we had several weeks to go get a replacement.

The problem with RP was that he left us hanging until almost signing day (coaches apparently knew a few days before but that isnt time enough to go get someone). We could have gone after Chase Daniel or Bobby Reid but passed on both thinking we had RP and Colt. When we made late pushes for Daniel and Reid they passed because we hadnt shown the earlier interest. It ended up working out for us but if Colt doesnt turn out to be so awesome it could have really left us high and dry.

Donnie Little already holds that distinction. And what about James Brown, the father of soul? Besides Scott was going to be a RB.

Some of the time line was incorrect.

Ryan Perrilloux was 2005, the same year as Colt McCoy and Chase Daniel. Of course Texas got McCoy and didn't try for Chase Daniel due to Perrilloux's great interest and eventual commitment. Mack may have known Perrilloux was wavering as by the time he started talking to Daniel, Chase has already conmmitted to Missouri and wasn't going to change his mind.

Bobby Reid was the year before, 2004, the same year as Rhett Bomer. Mack went Bomer or bust initially and by the time he realized Bomer was not going to Texas, Reid already committed to Oklahoma State and wasn't going toi change his mind.

Jevan Snead was 2006. Texas may have gone after him early, but Jevan early committed to Florida. He changed his mind and signed with Texas when Florida started going after Tim Tebow.

John Brantley was 2007. He liked Texas and commited but changed his mind. With him, there were too many Florida connections from where he lived to his father who was a QB at Florida to his high school coach who also a QB at Florida.
