The numbers: Four seniors; four juniors; four sophs; three frosh and one redshirt who will be a soph next year. That’s a total of 16 players on the roster, with one sitting out as a redshirt transfer. That leaves 15 active players this season.
Position numbers: Two Centers; five forwards and nine guards.
Eight players return that started at least one game last season. Out of 35 games, Kelsey (31) and Brady (29) return with the most starts. The others: Imani (8); Ariel (19); Brooke (15); Empress (20); Brianna (20) and Celina (16). Every one of those eight players averaged at least 15 minutes a game. This group will be one of the most, if not the most, experienced teams in the Big 12 this season.
Three others got experience playing in games last season: Tasia, Sara and Diani.
Newcomers number five: Emily (Jr. G); Khaléann ( transfer—RS soph. F) and frosh Jordan (F), Lashann (G) and Christina (F).
All of the front court players at least 6-1 (Jordan & Diani) with Imani at 6-7. Kelsey measures in at 6-5. Sara and Khaléann bring 6-4 size to the court. Christina is at 6-3. The guards range from 5-4 (Brooke & Tasia) to 5-11 (Brady, Ariel & Emily).
Every player can play at least two positions which allows for a lot of mixing and matching with opponents.
With all that experience, it is difficult to say that any one spot has been claimed. Going into last season, it was pretty much a given that Nneka had nailed down a starting spot. Can’t say that this season. There’s simply too much competition for playing time. I can’t wait to be able to start attending practices again to watch the competition.
