The real war on Women is in the middle east

Sadly the touted "Arab Spring" will likely make matters worse for women in the Middle East, not better, as more fundamentalists get more power.

Very enlightening provocative Op. Thanks for posting
I don't see the West being able to help living become better for women is muslim countries.
and I don't see the men in those countries changing their beliefs except perhaps to become even more anti women,

Too bad the muslim woman can't organize.

6 of one, half dozen of another.

Im not sure what modernity means, and if you use the USA as an example, Im sure our divorce rate and our modern view of women as sex objects, and women's views of their bodies as sex objects making them empowered is kinda F'ed up in the head.

I think traditional Christian values fall quite a bit in line with traditional Muslim values. The Quran states that you should respect your mother more than your father, that women are to be revered more than men.

That said, men beating their wives or taking advantage of them is bad, no matter what the religion or culture is.

Well you brought up modernity winning out.... Modernity has serious flaws. Do you have strangers raising your young children because you and your wife both work 40 hours a week?

Have you divorced your wife and had your children have to go through that? Do your children watch women on TV made into sex objects? Does it affect their perception of what a "modern" woman is?

The modern society has quite a few issues, and Ive met too many women who feel that unless they can bear their chests, literally, that they are being held back and held down, and that staying home and raising a family is demeaning....

I hope your confidence is well placed.
I don't see a path for organization of muslim women in muslim countries, a large enough muslim organization to effect any change. At least for the forseeable future.
The West will not be able to help.
The retreat back to stricter shaira law being made by the new leaders of government in the " Arab Spring' countries doesn't bode well for more freedoms for women in those countries.
That op you posted is probably a pretty good snapshot.
