Rented this movie last night, always wanted to see it when it was in theaters. The recognizable superb cast has Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendez, Rose Byrne, Ray Liota, and Bruce Greenwood. Mahershala Ali, a TV actor, and Ben Mendelsohn, a prolific character actor also give great performances.
And then there are stunning efforts by Emory Cohen and Dane DeHaan as two star-crossed teenagers in the third act that blow away anything that has come out of young hollywood over the past 5 years.
The movie is told in three acts. It centers around two men an their families, Ryan Gosling is the bank robber, and Bradley Cooper is the cop. IMO Gosling is following DeNiro and Cooper reminds me of Hoffman in their approach to acting (DiCaprio is Meryl Streep). And if this movie was made 40 years ago, DeNiro and Hoffman would be playing these roles.
It's got bank heists, motorcycles, film noir cinematography, and pretty actors who are also great at acting. It's feels like The Departed, Rebel Without a Cause, Serpico, On Any Sunday, and a classic Greek Tragedy all in one. Great acting, great story, great art direction/cinematography...this one will get serious Oscar consideration.
