Crap, the video clips were removed from the link you provided, but thanks for the heads-up. I was not aware of this upcoming mini-series, but I am very interested in seeing it.
BofB was a high water mark for me - this could be as good or perahps better. The soldier at the top of the website is a actual photo of a battle weary Marine at Guadalcanal, if I recall correctly. Perhaps the series is based around Guadalcanal? Similar to BofB, they could certainly build a mini-series starting with Marines training at Camp Pendleton in late 1941, reference Pearl Harbor, reference Wake and Midway and then the beach landing and bloody battle of Guadalcanal. It was a hot, humid mesquito infested jungle hell-hole. The Marines bravely fought and died over 6 months before finally defeating the stubborn Japanese.
Edit: Overall, I have a little more interest in the Pacific theather of WW II, as my Dad was a Navy Lt. JG on an LST ship in the Pacific and one of my Uncles was a Marine corpsman who was wounded at Iwo Jima. My other Uncle was the Gunnery Officer on the Yorktown.
One thing I recently found our from my brother is that once Europe was done, they sent my dad to the Pacific. I never knew that. Of course, like most WW2 vets, daddy would not talk about his experiences, other than to tell us how his unit had been the one to pioneer the use of whole blood in combat situations.
So I never knew he went to the Pacific, and then even was recalled for Korea.
I am looking forward to seeing this miniseries. I love BoB and think it is the best thing I've ever seen on any size screen. It was amazing, and if this one is even half as good, it will be a masterpiece.
Awesome timing. I was just thinking about this project yesterday. After hearing that Arrested Development was not going to be made into a movie, my next thought was on the Pacific BOB. Wasn't sure how far into production they were.
Anyway, my grandfather fought in the Pacific. Therefore, this movie could/should have more of an emotional effect on me than BOB - which, is actually a scary thought because there aren't many movies that got to me like BOB.
By the way, I clicked on the photos from the website linked and they have one of one of the characters post-torture. Like the concentration camp scene on BOB I can already tell you this will get me.
Also good to know...it looks as if the format will be the same as BOB in that they will have interviews with actual veterens. That was the stuff that got to me the most.
I'm not a fan of the Flight of the Conchords they show.
Damn, Tim Murphy of Jurassic Park. That will be weird to see. I'm amped about this. Call of Duty World at War comes out Tuesday too. Now I'm not trying to trivialize it (my grandpa was on a carrier in the Pacific) but I remember Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare gave me a new/different appreciation for what happened when Generation Kill came out. I imagine I would have that same sentiment for this.
Michael Kamen was the composer for BOB, and was great. Sadly, he passed away a couple years ago. I wonder who'll score The Pacific.
For me, BoB is the greatest thing ever on film. I'm more psyched for The Pacific than anything I can think of. Problem being, it will be soooo built up in my mind, I'll probably be somewhat disappointed no matter how good it is.
Okay, no more negative thoughts. Cannot wait!
Glad others out there feel as I do about BoB.
I can watch the episodes anytime they pop up on the History Channel (also have the DVD set). I can channel surf during a football timeout and get stuck on a BoB episode and lose track of time (except for UT games, of course). I just get sucked right in time after time.
My grandfather's brother flew B-25s, I believe, over Germany during WWII, so those stories always intrigued me.
Can't wait till The Pacific comes out. My uncle was in that arena, and I hope my high expectations of this show don't lead to a letdown.
I can't wait to see this... my Grandfather was in the Navy and fought at Guadalcanal. It would be nice to have a better historical perspective (albeit a Hollywood perspective) about the war in the South Pacific.
This thread inspired me to start watching BofB again... for the 20th time or something. I never get tired of this series. Just finished Caretan or however you spell it. The leadership, determination, bravery and guts of these guys just overwhelms me every time I watch it
first time i've seen this site, and i'm thrilled to see that Eugene Sledge is one of the primary characters. You may recall frequent references to him in Ken Burns' The War. If you have not read Sledge's book "With the Old Breed," then i very highly recommend you read it before watching this miniseries. i've read a lot of war-related books over the years, and nothing comes close to this one in terms of making you appreciate the gritty reality of a marine fighting on the pacific islands. i know that it is required first-semester reading at West Point.
With the Old Breed is incredible. I always plug it when books, especially memoirs, come up on the site. It spares nothing. Some of Sledge's descriptions of muddy battlefields will stay with me forever.
