The Oregonization of college football

I never thought I'd see a live-action version of this: The Link

This is Nike's biggest stage yet with which to promote their radical redesign (or reconceptualization?) of college football uniforms. Of course, that means that the debate over the uniforms will heat up again.

I don't get it. The senseless flair - Oregon's diamond plate, BSU's 'B' on the knee. The lack of context - don't school's wear their colors anymore? The detailing - is that circuitry in VT's helmet stripe? The loud colors, the abandonment of traditional looks.

Saint Royal's quote comes to mind when thinking about these new abominations: “We don't want any candy stripes on our uniforms. These are work clothes.”

Well, now they're more like prom dresses. Sorry, coach.

I agree with DKR. These are work clothes. I was glad to see that when Texas wore those Nike Pro Combat uniforms against A&M last Thanksgiving, they stuck with a very traditional look (I like seeing the numbers on the UT helmets every once in a while) that was nearly identical to the standard uniform.

i remember the movie "any given sunday"...and the uniforms included in that movie. i remember thinking "man, those are ugly, i'm sure glad that uniforms dont look like that"

the unis from last night make the ones from that movie look downright conservative.

i dont mind it, but man. both teams went wild.

No comment necessary.

I am all for these uniforms when OTHER teams want to go out there in a different clown costume every game.

One day, they will look back on these uni's and snort at the fact that they ever thought this football equivalent bellbottoms and butterfly collars was ever cool.... And they'll probably be wearing the football equivalent of parachute pants wrist bands and not even know the irony.

They are only weakening their brand while we strengthen ours.

Texas has the #1 marketing brand in college sports and it is not even a close race. That is all you need to know. DKR was right and Mack Brown made sure that fact was honored.

Some kids dig it. In one of those informal offseason polls, something like 60 percent of college football players involved in the poll said that they wished their uniforms were MORE like Oregon's. I can't find a link right now, but I think I'm being conservative with my estimate.

A lot of high schools are going to the fancier uniforms as well, so to go from a detailed, intricate design in H.S. to just "white" in college makes recruits actually consider the way they look.

I know football has probably gone through stages of uniform/equipment nonsense. First it was adding numbers to the jerseys, then changing the helmet from leather to plastic, then the weird obsession with teal in the 1990s (although this was more for every other sport, not as much football), and now it's the styling of the "futuristic" look. It's going to happen almost everywhere, just not at Texas.

My little brother (16 in HS) and some of his friends came over to watch the game monday, they all kept talking about how awesome boisie's uni's looked. especially the helmet. fwiw.

I'm still waiting for our black jerseys and capes

Boise's uniforms would have looked good if the shirt background was solid grey instead of alternating patches of grey and white.

My cousin who plays D-1 likes new style unis and older unis. I liked both when I was a player. Don't see the big deal. If our coaches pulled out some possible unis and asked the players if they wanted to wear them, they'd lose their minds with joy. Don't think any would stand up in the uniform anger that I always see on these boards and stomp them out.

Tradition -- pffffttt!!!

I think the Notre Dame locker room exit to the field overhead sign that says: "Play Like a Champion Today" should be replaced with an LED display that could be programmed.

Maybe one Saturady it'd be: "HEY, Get Your Ganja Buzz On Today!"

or

"Attention, Tires Are On Sale Today At Your Nearest Wall-Mart."

The players would love it.

I love our traditional look. My 16 yr. old, who lives football and his team mates all like the new uniforms Nike is putting out. Very much an age thing.
