I spent the last three weekends marathoning The Office and Dexter. I'd seen enough of the Office to finally get it, I'd heard about Dexter. No spoilers follow.
The Office is one of the best shows I've ever seen on TV. The patient character development and mix of caricature and real character is pretty dang awesome. I watched the first three seasons on DVD and anxiously await season 4. If others have been like me and slow to "get it," I recommend renting the first season DVD. From there, it just gets better.
Dexter's premise about a sociopathic serial killer raised by a father who recognized his personality and taught him to both hide it and indulge his desire to kill by taking the lives of the wicked sounded a little far-fetched to me. But the girlfriend liked it when she saw it with her daughter, so I gave it a look.
Dexter is another show with an array of interesting characters and relationships. Dexter's voice over is great and the short term and long term plotting of the two seasons on DVD is very good. Also quite interesting is how Dexter's constant need to put up a facade begins to resonate as you watch the show.
These shows have been discussed before on the board, but I usually skipped the Office threads because I wasn't watching. This is just a recommendation from someone way behind the curve.
I don't even think ninjas could improve these shows
