Goodbye Taliban

That A-10 has to be the ugliest, nastiest, meanest looking aircraft there is, just a bunch of weapons with wings...

PS: I don't know why the images won't post

Oh wow!!! Check out this video of an Apache doing what it does at night. These dudes thought they were being slick but they got Cellblock C treatment.

I'm not usually one for hyperbole, but if your Cobras had those optics in 'Nam, the war wouldn't have lasted 90 days. Everything the NVA and VC did was at night.

Here's the thing about attack helicopters: if your opponent is bush-league, they are gods of war. If your opponent has air defenses, even MANPADs, they are a liability. That's why the Comanche project abruptly ended after Iraqi Freedom- they were doing 2 passes with F-16s the clear the way for 1 flight of AH-64s. It stopped making sense.

I always loved helicopters as just about every boy does but when I got to repel out of 'em and boy did it turn into infatuation.

Sharky, I was one of these in the Army:

(Man, those guys above are really sloppy! I know they are in training but still, they are ate up. They are submarines with screen doors, soup sandwiches.)

We could not have done this without guys like you: The Link

I loved that stuff and miss it now. Loved it so much I went to Pathfinder School and got the awesome badge I could not wear back at Battalion, PDS.

This I don't miss! The Link

Air Assault was tougher in all aspects than Airborne. There are mental aspects to Air Assault School when you get to sling loading, recognition, memorizing how to call in the choppers and proper landing and take off signals. Also calling in the proper smoke you will be setting off and where you are so they find you.

As a Pathfinder you find the LZ's and a whole bunch more.

Shark, they told us how the VC caught on pretty quick to the smoke colors we used so it had to be called in as the bird's approached since the VC would set fake LZ's and then ambush.

Securing a hot LZ and the coordination from ground to air on pre-landing directions for the guys coming down was tedious. They have to hit the ground, usually coming down Aussie Repel, and go to the specific spot and lay down suppressive fire. You did not desire to be the first down since the guys on the ground are not likely to be able to be on belay for you.

Chopper pilots are gods.

Yes. I assume you mean Pathfinder but just in case the answer is likely yes anyway. Basic and AIT, Benning. Airborne, Benning. P-finder, Benning.

Air Assault is not just at Ft. Campbell as it used to be. For quite some time it was offered at Ft. Belvoir in the MDW area and I think out in Hawai'i for the Schofield Barracks guys. There may be more, I dunno.

We got to do some stuff on Bragg for 4 days and left Benning. We did a joint exercise with Airborne units to check out simultaneous drops with insertions (NO SEX AT ALL?). It was an experiment for something along the lines of being compatible. I never knew just what it was and never found out.

The guys that were flat out "legs" got much grief from the Airborne people at Bragg, which is quite a few. I already had mine so I was immune to the heckling. It was funny to me but not to the guys on the receiving end.

Sharky, I would love to pick your brain, here stories and ask questions sometime, somewhere. Maybe over some BBQ? I would say chili but you may still have enough Yankee in you that you would request beans!

Shark, I always suspected you were crazy, and this thread absolutely confirms it!

Never been in a chopper and hope to never have to be in one--I prefer things with a glide ratio (autorotation isn't the same!). As my best friend is fond of saying, "Helicopters don't fly; they beat the air into submission!"

I would like to be in a chopper sometime in the future and get to actually step off of it to the ground and not by repel or other means. Then again, repel was fun as hell. It's the danged Swiss Seat we had to make use of. Swiss Seats make tight cheeks! My testes would appreciate not having a Swiss Seat too.

It is fair to add that if you look at the altitude compared to sea level you will find it lower after I left Ft. Benning than it was before. I did a whole lot of pushing the ground. I beat my face a goodly amount.
