The MOB

I noticed a poster on Barking Carnival make a good point. Is Rice's band going to be able to perform this year? I seem to remember them getting banded from DKR a few years back.

There are so many juicy topics for them to make fun of this year (LHN, Aggy to SEC, Governor Goodhair, etc.). It would be a shame if they didn't get a chance to put on a show.

The MOB will be at Saturday's game. The MOB is always welcome in DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. They're our favorite visiting band by far.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Aggies have banned the MOB from Kyle Field. The MOB halftime show that caused the Aggies to riot actually happened in Houston, so I bet the MOB is no longer welcome in College Station. I'm surprised the LHB hasn't been banned from Kyle Field simply because it's the LHB.

I'm pretty sure aggy banned the mob after they played a Mickey mouse hybrid poking fun at aggy during half time at Kyle field. The mob is always welcome here.

They are welcome, but we don't always allow them to perform at halftime, depending on whether or not the alumni band is performing. It is a real shame when this happens, as most, although not all, like to see their satirical skits.
I believe what set aggy off was the MOB forming a giant fire hydrant for Reveille's benefit. As always, aggy doesn't appreciate any humor.

accurate is. well Accurate.
The MOB has never been banned.
In years when they don't get to perform at halftime they always get to do a pregame.

I know there are LHB members on here who can tell us when the MOB will perform saturday.

sadly the last few years, even in Houston the MOB has been lackluster. Maybe this year's events will have inspired them.

I was at Rice Stadium November 17, 1973 and witnessed the Riot Game first hand. I was but a lad at the time and this was my first up close encounter with aggy. They were the same then as they are now and will be 100 years hence.

Long live Carl Swierc!

Here is the Rice perspective regarding this game:

There was a similar incident in the early '80s when Rice played aggy, and I think it was in Rice's stadium again. The MOB or other organzied group of students had watched the aggy band half-time performance enough times (easy to do since it never changes) and figured out how to imitate the whistle signals that they turn on. So, there were premature whitle signals at a yard-line and a large portion of the aggy band turned at the wrong place, creating havoc and they collided with those who hadn't heeded the wrong signals. Aggy was pretty peeved at that and complained bitterly about how some of their CTs were injured by the collisions... Waa-waa-waa. I'm not sure what they did to retaliate after that one.

I was an undergrad at Rice, at the game in October 1981. It was amazing. Yes, there were some students blowing whistles, and it completely discombobulated the Aggie band. Band members not only walked in incorrect formations, they actually collided.
It got worse. We were doing Nazi salutes throughout. Also, Weiss College [the then-RIce equivalent of Animal House] had held its annual "Night of Decadence" party (always a great party). The theme that year was "Caligula." Among the props at the party was a giant paper mache [phallis]. Some guys snuck it in with the band, and were thrusting it in the air repeatedly. The cops finally took it away, to chants of "bring me back my d***"
It was a crazy day. Great times. Rice President Hackerman (yes, of UT fame) was not amused.
The earlier incident (involving the fire hydrant, playing "Where has my Liittle Dog Gone," "March of the Toy Soldiers," goose-stepping, etc) was sometime in the 70s and it did occur at Rice Stadium. From what I know, the Ags were so mad they cornered the MOB in an end-zone tunnel, and I believe the MOB had to be taken out in food service trucks.

IIRC, it was a laundry truck.

The amazing this is that "Old Army" is still proud of it.
