The Missing Ring: 1966 Bama team

I caught a mid-program broadcast on 1560AM Houston, an author of a book on the 1966 Alabama team was discussing the season. It was about an undefeated, untied, all-white Alabama team that lost to Ara Parseghian's Notre Dame -- who tied Michigan State that season.

The point was that the cultural climate of the 60's, combined with the Notre Dame mystique, conspired to prevent the better Alabama from receiving the National Championship that season.

Of note: Alabama had to replace Tulane, who had just defected that year from the SEC, with a lackluster Louisiana Tech. The appearance was that of a scheduled cupcake.

It was also mentioned how this season affected Bama's bringing on African-American players as walkons, but that none made it on the team until 1969.

Interesting.

Anyone else have some good dope on this? It was a cool story.

The ironic thing is that Alabama may have deserved it that year, but they have about 3 or 4 other national titles where they have no business being named the national champion.

1964, 1973 and their 1978 mational title teams are the ones Ithat come to mind

The 1966 season was was kinda of a backlash against Alabama because their previous two national titles weren't really won outright.

Well, Texas beat their 1964 championship team in the '65 Orange Bowl.

We had only lost one game that season - to Arky by 1 point when a two point conversion fell a yard or so short.
