The Melting Pot

Eastside

This may belong on the Around Austin forum as there are locations there, but I'm specifically asking about the Houston Westheimer location.

A friend wants to go for her birthday next week, thoughts? recommendations? advice? We have not been, and want to know a little about what we're getting into. I know it's a bit on the pricey side, and that's not a concern, but if it's not worth it for the experience and the food, then I think we'd rather go somewhere else.

Thanks.

I am not a food expert or anything, but we went to the Austin one with another couple and enjoyed it. It was a little expensive, but not the same old thing, and I think everyone was happy.

There are way too many better places to spend that kind of money in any town. Quite honestly, I think fondue-type places are best for the steak and ale crowd and homecoming/prom dates.

I'd say give it a shot. The food isn't anything special, but it's ok. It is a little expensive if you just consider the food. However, it is generally a fun place to go with a group of friends, especially if you haven't ever "fondued" before. The best part about it is it takes a couple of minutes to cook each piece of food, and you cook at your own pace, so there is plenty of time to talk with your friends. Of course, if you hate it, forget I said anything, but it's typically an enjoyable time. We probably go once every couple of years.

I would definitely get reservations ahead of time, especially for a big group. Know that it takes a LONG time to eat because your just cooking a couple of pieces at a time (along with everyone else), so enjoy hanging out with friends. I would suggest getting one of the cheese fondue starters (not the one that is basically mexican style queso) - they are pretty good. Most definitely get one of the chocolate desserts - they are excellent. I think they have set menus where you get all three for a set price/person, but I haven't been in a while.

If you get there and don't want to go through with it, Fuad's next door is really good. And really expensive - although you won't find that out until you get the bill since they don't have a menu and you just tell the chef what you want to eat. It is definitely a unique place.

If you're going more for the experience than the food, its ok. But food-wise, there are much better places for the money.

It's a fun experience... once. Beyond that i concur with what others are saying. The food really isn't that great. Ironically, the salad was the best part of the meal.

I certainly don't think they have the greatest food, but we went with a group of ten this past summer and had an absolute blast. I think it's just something different to do. If you are looking for a fun birthday place, I also recommend Uptown Sushi.
