The King's Speech

Excellent movie. I had some worries it might be a "Tea-on-the-Lawn" yawn fest like some English period pieces can be, but this was witty, brilliantly acted and very well put together.

The relationship between Colin Firth as the Prince and Geoffrey Rush as his therapist crackles. The chameleon Guy Pierce is great in a supporting role, he may be the world's greatest actor for completely changing into whomever his is playing.

No doubt, this will be a heavy Oscar contender. It's the best movie I've seen so far this year.

I thought it was quite entertaining and certainly kept my unflagging interest but not worth the matinee $9.50 cost. The acting, of course, is great as pointed out in the OP, but I should have waited for the rental. I'm cheap. The historical context in the lead up to WW-II was interesting and I got a much better understanding of a lot of back history for events I came to know growing up in the 1950's.

As a side note, I briefly met Helena Bonham Carter's character, by then the Queen Mother, in 1967 by luck. She was the "most beloved" of the royal family for decades before her death and this movie explains why.

I think that I'll agree with OldHippie (i.e., previous poster) that he's cheap - pay the $10 and see the movie now.

On a separate tangent, the AMC where I saw this movie has 15" of pseudo- Entertainment Tonight stuff with a lot of commercials THEN showed 10" of trailers before the start of the movie. On second thought, OldHippie is right - wait for the DVD on this one.

Great movie - liked it a lot.

Think it will be in the mix for best picture and best actor(s) awards.

Colin Firth is a lock for Best Actor. Academy voters love actors portraying people with disabilities (e.g., Dustin Hoffman in Rainman, Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot). Haven't seen other movies to comment on should he win; however, this was a good movie and I enjoyed his acting.

It's quite hard to believe that character played by Helena Bonham Carter died just a few years ago at the age of 101, outliving the King by almost 50 years.

What a life the queen mum lived!
