The owners of the property are trying to sell it. $972,000. The lease ends in Jan. The Austin Chronicle (p.51) has more. It would be sad to see another TRUE Austin original go down. The drag will be a bit more emptier.
I wonder what god-awful chain restaurant or store they'll put in its place. I still haven't gotten over Les Amis being replaced by a Starbucks and Mad Dogs being replaced by a Johnny Rockets.
I remember the night of the big Centenniel fire, I lived across the street and my electricity was out. Me and some friends got bored of watching the fire so we went walking around.
Just a couple blocks away some god awful punk band was blasting a way in front of about a dozen people at the Hole in the Wall. It was a beautiful sight.
Actually, Johnny Rockets went into an old house that stood vacant almost the whole time I lived in Austin/attended UT. Couldn't believe they turned Mad Dog & Beans into a parking lot.
Puddle,
The GM Steakhouse everyone is lamenting is the one that used to be on the Drag near MLK. It had great, greasy food and loudspeakers on the sidewalk to insult passersby. Of course, you could go inside and get insulted right proper face-to-face. The last I checked the place was some Asian restaurant.
