The Hangover, Part II

Anyone . . .Anyone. . .

Wondering whether to pay $10.50 at the theatre or wait until cable tellyvision.

it's "review proof" and will make a ton of cash, but Rotten Tomatoes has it at 32% fresh.

The Link

And I don't think that is due to critic high brow snobery; the orginal Hangover got a 79% fresh rating.

I liked the first one, but I think i will be waiting for the DVD for part II.

I am willing to pay the $10.50, while having a child and needing a babysitter has raised my movie standards considerably- I still believe in the "escapism" aspect of movies- it's nice to get out of the house and put the brain on vacation mode for 2 hours.

If I get 5 or 6 good laughs from this movie- I'll be satisfied. Besides, I almost feel like I owe it to them for the first Hangover alone.

My nephew saw it and hated it. Said he laughed about three times.

I don't see how they can match the surprise of the first movie which was very funny. I doubt I'll see it unless I hear great things about it. I'd much rather sit through a poor action movie than a poor comedy.

95% of sequels that are made just because the first movie did well and not because a series / trilogy / whatever was planned from the get-go end up utterly sucking.

Sequels to Mad Max, The Godfather, Terminator, and Alien were all very good. The ones to Rocky, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Star Wars were good. Maybe throw in Lethal Weapon, The Thin Man, and a few others not coming immediately to mind and I think Statalyzer is just about right on the money with his percentage if not a little generous.

The most fun thing about the original of Hangover was how you never knew what would happen next and whatever happened was way out there. It's hard to recreate that in a sequel where our starting point is the first movie. You end up merely repeating yourself, like Airplane 2, or missing the mark by being too goofy or flat.

I guess the Pink Panther series succeeded to some degree, but I was never a big fan of those movies.

Funny enough to deserve being the #1 comedy opening in history?

Although it seems like every half-decent movie of the past 5 years has won some sort of unadjusted "most money" title, so I don't put any stock in those, with the combination of more population, higher prices, and faux-3D films that drive up the price even higher.

As suggested, you really can't compare box office returns for films from different eras unless you adjust for inflation, but the studios don't want to do that because the "bigger, better, more" hype serves as (yet) another marketing tool to draw the public to the theatres. People are paying $12 for Hangover 2 compared with what, $2 for Star Wars? Ticket sales would be a much better means of comparison, but I bet they haven't always tracked that like they do today.

Just saw it...maybe I wasn't in the right mood but it seemed dark and macabre instead of crazy/fun/outlandish like the first one. Came across to me more like a crime solve movie instead. I'd have to give it a thumbs down.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a sequel that had less imagination than this one. Same cast, same structure, same plot threads (guy finds out he sleeps w/. prostitute), same Tyson cameo, etc., etc. Also a ton of lines of dialogue of "Can't believe it happened again" or "Did you drug us again," etc.

My buddy wanted to see it so I was a good sport and went...
I had very low expectations and yet managed to leave the theater disappointed.

I liked it fine. Wasn't the greatest film ever, but was great escapism. It is a great deal like the first, but still had some twists I enjoyed. I was also out without the kids. The wife and I saw it with another couple. We went to New Braunfels to tube last Friday, and so we saw it Thursday night at some theatre there that was just $5, so a pretty good value. Also, I did have German food before, so the litre of beer I had before the movie probably didn't hurt how funny I found it.

Went in with low expectations and it delivered right around where my expectations were. There were funny moments, but really it is just the first movie with a different location. Which begs the question, how the hell do you get into the same situation again?

The movie was a "cash grab" - exact same story as the 1st with a helluva lot less LOL'ing. The movie just seemed to chase it's tail a lot. Wait for it on video.
