the greatness of Calvin and Hobbes

zzz.gif

I think the term greatness is being used a little too judiciously lately.

C&H is not awful by any means, but greatness?

Calvin and Hobbes is ABSOLUTELY greatness.

Anyone who says otherwise, either hasn't read enough of it, or just didn't understand it. In case you just haven't read enough:

take some time for the sublime

you're welcome.

C&H's cartoon about the math athiest is my calling card. I have it on the window of my office.

Texanne - Do you have the date on that one? I don't remember it and would like to look it up.

[shrugging my shoulders] Again, it's ok, i guess.

And Montag, sorry you think i am an idiot. I haven't taken much note of your posts, but if i did have something critical to say, it would be in reference to the content of your posts and not you personally.

In my opinion, Calvin and Hobbes is the best comic strip in my lifetime. Period. Bar none.

Far Side, Doonesbury, Bloom County, and a couple of others come close, but nothing surpasses Watterson's work.

My wife bought me a C&H book for Christmas. Just love it, and the great thing is my 8 year old daughter has started reading it and loves it as well. I love my wife.

Older Doonesbury, from the Nixon/Ford era, were much better than today's stuff. That's why I put it on the list above. I would say it is the weakest of my 2nd tier list.

2002,
I got my then 9 year old daughter every C&H book (used, from Amazon) after she bought one and liked it. Funny, she comes in the room all excited and talking to me like I'd never heard of C&H, of course as far as she knew I hadn't! So I told her how much I loved it, and now she has read every last strip.

She's 10 now, doodles cartoons all the time, and it's obvious her drawing style has been influenced by Watterson. Maybe one day we'll get to see her work in the Daily Texan or beyond.

Calvin and Hobbes and Get Fuzzy are my favorite strips. It's true that not everybody "gets" them, especially Get Fuzzy, but they appeal to my sense of humor and sense of felines.

I read C&H religiously as a small kid. Pretended to do all the same stuff (transmogrifier gun, Calvinball, talk with my stuffed animal, etc.). I still have all of my original C&H books in a box in storage.

I have a two-week old son, and I can't wait to hand the books over to him when he's old enough.

First Valentines Day after we were married, my wife surprised me with the hard bound boxed set of the complete Calvin and Hobbes.

If anyone needs ideas, that's about the best Valentines gift I ever received.

There used to be a reporter at the Temple Daily Telegram who had a Calvin and Hobbes tattoo on his deltoids.

One of the few tats I've ever seen that I actually liked.

Bill Watterson's brother is a teacher at Austin High. He had a band called The Rels. Bill designed some cool t-shirts for the band using carved wood blocks. After the printing, he destroyed the blocks, making these tees pretty rare. Especially to the C&H crowd.

Just keeping it all about Austin, is all.
