The Greatest Rolling Stones Song ever is

live -- Sympathy for the Devil.
recorded -- You Cant' Always Get What You Want.

I couldn't pick a "greatest" song, but I'd put "Paint it Black," "Gimme Shelter," and "Sympathy for the Devil" among my favorites.

*****
Shine a light
Tumbling dice
wild horses
under my thumb
satisfaction

who knows? It's like choosing b/w your children.

I'll pick "Satisfaction" as their greatest song.

"*****" also has a powerful riff, pushed by a horn section with Bobby Keys on sax.

Of their lesser known songs, I've always liked "The Spider and the Fly."

It has a nice groove with Charlie playing it straight, so the other instruments can use a shuffle feel.

Of their ballads, I'll pick "Wild Horses."

At their best, they are a great band; but many of their albums have a bunch of filler, IMHO

I've seen them live six times over the decades, since they are my age, and I've always been entertained by how they very often use a tight back beat and a "looser," sometimes quite different, rhythmic feel from the other instruments and the vocal.

This creates a tasty musical tension that identifies them for me.

"Tumbling Dice," "Beast of Burden" and
"Brown Sugar" are excellent examples of their mastery of this ensemble combination of playing techniques.

Of course, "Satisfaction" and "*****" are the opposite of this, being straight ahead rockers.

"Get Off Of My Cloud" is interesting because it combines a pretty straight rhythm in the chorus with syncopation in the verses while Watts does the same pa-rum-pa-pum-pum as the little drummer boy, but sped up to a rock tempo.

This makes the music ebb and flow interestingly as it switches back and forth.

Jackson Browne, with Russ Kunkel on drums, uses this same instrumental and vocal syncopation thing over pretty straight back beat drumming on "Somebody's Baby" and Tom Petty does the same thing on many of his songs.

I think The Stones' best stuff is really, really good and I'm a long time, loyal fan.

I don't have a favorite, but I've been saying for the past two decades that Some Girls was their last "great" album.

It appears that everyone else agrees with me.

I would say that, based on popularity, Satisfaction gets the nod. I will say this though. I saw them only once. 1981 in the Cotton Bowl in a torrential rainstorm. And to the day I die I will never forget Micks' blatant defiance of the elements during the opening lines of Jumping Jack Flash. He had come out from under the stage cover and it was like he was just daring the rain gods to bring it on. So that one has always been my favorite song

I'm partial to Rocks Off and Down the Line

I do also like star star (starfuc****) just coz I think the lyrics are hysterical.

There's plenty of great Stones songs, but only one has been voted the greatest Rock 'n Roll song ever in some polls on that subject, and that is Satisfaction. There's no doubt that is their greatest song.

Paint it Black.

But on the whole, other than Charlie Watts subtly amazing drum skills, the Rolling Stones don't do it for me.

I know it is not a RS original, but "Dead Flowers" gets my vote.

It was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards...and it gets my vote, as well.
