I thought it was a good show as well. I didn't think that Vince Gill's comment was a dig, or if it was, it was really mild. Maybe I didn't get it. Herbie Hancock for album of the year? WTF?
I was eagerly watching for John Fogerty's reaction to Tina Turner and Beyonce performing "Proud Mary," but he didn't show much in the shot we got of him after they were through.
Fogerty saved his smiles and excitement for his performance with Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.
I guess I was anticipating more reaction after seeing Pat Boone, years ago, giving Cheap Trick a wowed, WTF, standing ovation after they finished ripping through Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame," which Pat had saccharinized in his well-known cover version.
Of course, Fogerty's original river rollin' rendition of the song he wrote still holds up very well, while Boone should figuratively roast in Hell, IMHO, for his faux pas.
Ike and Tina's revved up cover of "Proud Mary" probably got a reaction from Fogerty the first time he heard it.
I bet Kanye West feels he was blindsided ny Herbie Hancock for Album of the Year.
Jazz over Rap, that was a welcome surprise for me.
Vince Gill had the line of the night.
Having just been received his award for Best Country Album from Ringo Starr, Gill was enough in awe of that whole fab concept to spot multiple award nominee Kanye West in the first few rows and ask: "I just got a Grammy from a Beatle, has that happened to you yet, Kanye?"
West laughed.
Amy Winehouse rocked from London performing "Rehab," the Song and Record of the Year.
It must have been in the early morning hours there.
She reminds me of Cyndi Lauper, I guess mostly for her quirky strangeness.
Amy seems to me a modern Billie Holiday channeling "Time After Time," "True Colors" and "Girls Just Want To Have Fun."
I wonder if she'll live long enough to ever reach Cyndi, Cher, Tina or Carole King's age.
BTW, I think Avril Lavigne is about the most interesting female performer/songwriter I've heard since Joni Mitchell.
Keely Smith, who with Louie Prima won a Grammy for it in the late fifties, sang "That Old Black Magic" with Kid Rock.
"Round and round I go....."
Cab Calloway, whom I saw perform at Aggieland in the sixties as the halftime entertainment during a Harlem Globetrotters appearance, received a Musical Icon Award.
If Alicia Keyes had a little more beauty than brashness in her voice, I'd like her better.
There was something for everyone and, using my fast forward, I zoomed through a lot of stuff I identified as being for someone else.
Foo Fighters performed one of their songs that I like the least.
They won Rock Album of the Year.
Considering the huge number of commercials and several performances I tried to get into, but then sped up, my plan to tape it and then surf through it post broadcast worked well.
I haven't watched the Grammy's in years but for some reason decided to watch last night. Glad I did, it was a pretty enjoyable show.
The best moment for me was seeing Amy Winehouse win song of the year. She was genuinely shocked. She had a big night with 5 wins, and her performance via satellite was great.
