The GOP brazenly redraws the map of Texas

I'm no constitutional lawyer but I just don't understand how gerrymandering could be considered constitutional. This is the lousy system that give us the Sheila Jackson Lee's of the world. It is just wrong. If our census is of any value, we should be able to design software that blindly designs congressional districts without prejudice.

That is why it needs to be challenged in the courts. Look, the Democrats were in control for the longest time, and they screwed the Republicans. Now the Republicans are getting their payback. But if you are a liberal in my district, you basically do not get represented. Likewise if you are conservative in a designated liberal district, you are out of luck. How in the hell can that be a fair way for the people of this country to be represented? An individual's only recourse is to make sure you live in the "right colored" district. That is insane. It other words, it makes no difference how much of an idiot SJL is. She cannot be defeated.

This happens in every state in the Union and both parties do it.

I am not sure how though you could draw districts to make sure each vote counted.

The funniest redrawing this year put Doggett in a very Hispanic district and running against a very popular San antonio Hispanic.

Then there was a redrawing , when Dems were in charge, that left a GOPER with no chance to win.

It isn't a fair way but I don't know how you could redraw every district to be evenly split.

Its not about splitting fairly! What is this, a youth soccer game? Wheres the capri sun?

Its idiocy. Are county lines drawn to favor certain groups or individuals?

Why does one party deserve its own favorable district, and the other party deserve its own? Draw the districts so that they are distributed based on population numbers, not how you think they are going to vote. Might as well stuff the ballot boxes and be done with it....

Heres an idea, make them geographical and let the candidates actually make an attempt to represent the people instead of trotting out a flag and saying "Im republican" or "Im democrat" "and this is a district that is on my team so vote for me."

Its a total scam. I cant believe people justify it.

No question the 2 parties are all about and mostly only about power

But the point made earlier that some in each district, depending on their party loyalty, will essentially have no vote.
There is no way around that.

If you took the State of Texas and divided the state into geogrphic boundries of what 700,000 people? There would be very few if any Democratic districts.

Hell, I would say that if you did the same to California there would be more democratic districts but the amount of Republican districts would surprise people.

I have never really looked at state houses, what does the gerry mandering look like there?

Well if you divide the state into equally sized districts, or those based on population density, and it so happens that more districts are republican than democrat, then tough ****.

If people are dumb enough to vote for a candidate simply based on what party he is from, then it doesnt really matter in the end. If people cant look at the candidates platform and what he stands for, then to heck with them.

The older I get the more opportunities I've had to see that while I respect my own intelligence, there are intelligent people who see things differently.

The legislature is responsible for deciding the boundaries on the districts. The people are responsible for electing the legislators.

The people have spoken. Elections have consequences. The districts are perfectly legitimate.

Case closed.

So you think it is idiotic to vote , even when we have 2 candidates that are less than ideal?

I think it is beyond idiotic to NOT participate in the only system we have for now.
No candidate is ideal to everyone but IMO the intelligent person will sit down and consider a candidate's history experience and ideology.
It may be that there are only 2 areas you find common ground with one candidate and 4 with another.
To not vote seems lazy and stupid to me. why would anyone cede the choice of who governs, city county state or country to someone else?

So B youI think the people who do vote and therefore make choices for you, like it nor not, are idiots.
While you are sitting around not voting someone will be elected. I see the ifiot arrow pointing a different direction

so I will always vote.

YOu are correct. BI never says he doesn't vote does he?
he started off by pointing out " what the two party system" has brought us.
Then he says anyone who votes for either of the two parties is an idiot.

So I wonder who he does vote for?

and what one would call someone who votes for a candidate who has no chance of winning versus someone who votes for the better of the candidates the current 2 party system fields.

BI
I agree that we end up with candidates that can be less than we wanted. I blame media for much of that.
Who would want to subject themselves anfd their family to the brutality of the media?

Still, for now , it is a two party system and I want to at least have some tiny say in it

On an individual level it may be dumb not to vote. However, I think these people who treat voting as a virtue and think high turn-out is automatically a good thing are stupid and dangerous.

People have a right to vote, but I also think they have a responsibility to become informed about who and what they're voting for. If someone is thoroughly uninformed, he shouldn't vote just for the sake of voting.

Mr. Deez is correct. In a lot of "down the ballot" races bad people with good names have been elected over good people with funny sounding names
