The Field of Dreams

Ladies and gentlemen, this is it. We’ve reached the final game. The final battle. The battle for the right to be called BCS National Champion. The brink of glory and immortality. We vanquished our rivals, beat back all challengers, succeeded in pressure situations, and now we have the Big 12 Championship to our credit. We have accomplished many extraordinary things this season, but our work is far from done. This is no time to rest on our laurels. This is the time for us to work and strive our hardest to achieve the ultimate prize.

Our final foe is Alabama. It is good to see these two titans of college football square off once again. While it is true that Texas has never lost to Alabama, leading the all-time series 7-0-1, the last game between these two teams was in 1982; Alabama will not be paying attention to the all-time record, so neither should we.

This is a very evenly-matched game; Number 1 versus Number 2 always is. In such games, there is one crucial intangible that will decide everything: heart. How bad do I want to win the National Championship? How bad do you want to win the National Championship? Are we willing to sacrifice everything? Are we willing to put it all on the line? Are we willing to fight and work harder than ever before to reach the mountaintop? If there was ever a game where we had to give all of ourselves and hold nothing back, this is it. This is the biggest game of them all. We’ve worked incredibly hard to get to this game. Hold absolutely nothing back.

On January 7th in Pasadena, we fight not just for ourselves but for our entire conference. These are somewhat tumultuous times for the Big 12: there are some who say we are not as strong as we would like to think, and, of course, the conference has been rocked by coaching controversies. On January 7th, we will take the Big 12 upon our shoulders and represent it with pride and excellence. We will show that ours is a conference to be feared, revered, and respected. It is time to break the “SEC mystique” and become the new masters of college football.

This is the moment we Longhorn fans live for. We now have the chance to add to the lore to The University of Texas: the chance to add a trophy to our collection, the chance to add a National Championship year to the façade of Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium, the chance to create a moment in time that will be replayed and cherished in the hearts and minds of Longhorn fans everywhere forever.

The grass in Pasadena has been our field of dreams over the past couple of years. Dusty Mangum’s kick brought us our first Rose Bowl victory, and Vince Young’s legendary performance a year later brought us our second, along with a National Championship. Now, in our third trip to Pasadena, we turn our attention to Colt McCoy. A young man from the small town of Tuscola, Texas, McCoy is now a college football legend, having led the Longhorns to an FBS-record 45 wins. Now, it is time to get win number 46—the crown jewel of McCoy’s incredible college career.

But, of course, McCoy cannot do it alone. This will be a team effort. The players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, the thousands of Longhorn fans watching in Pasadena, and the millions watching all over the world—everyone who bleeds burnt orange and sees with the Eyes of Texas must give their all to live the dream. And we will live the dream. We will win the final battle. We will take our place among college football’s immortals.

Hook ‘em, Horns.

Wow, someone tell that to Stoops and Pelini.

The team fights for itself, not the rest of the conference. Screw the rest of our crappy conference.

Well thought and written. Field of Dreams is one of my favorite movies. Nice metaphorical tie-in. Now, we need BIS for a follow-on post so we can maintain our focusness!
