Really lovely movie. It's fun at times, winsome, smart and touching.

Spoiler alert: If you go with a tender woman, expect to see some tears before this one is over. I went with a not especially tender woman and she cried a lot -- maybe even more than me.

I didn't experience miserable sadness, like when I watched Old Yeller at 5. But in a great movie when I like and connect with the characters I deliberately free my emotions to be engulfed in the story -- to connect with lives of the characters almost like I'm in the family. I'm not easily manipulated. Taking a date to Ordinary People in 1980 is probably the most recent time I became so emotionally engaged while watching a movie.

I hope I didn't discourage you. I didn't for a second regret watching it and I'll choose to watch it again when its on HBO or other TV channel.

I read this book and then saw the movie. I cried during both. While it is very emotional, it's touching and worth the tears. You see the world not only from the point of view of someone dying, which has been done before, but from the point of view of a teenager dying. I enjoyed both the book and the movie, and highly recommend them.
